Upgraded VW Constellation An opportunity for greater profits

Ever since its introduction to the local truck transport market in late 2006, the Volkswagen Constellation range of heavy-duty trucks has made steady headway into leading fleets, thanks to its solid German engineering, fuel economy, drive comfort and pulling power. The range, which forms part of the MAN stable, includes both truck tractor and rigid (freight carrier) derivatives that fill a gap in the market between low-price Asian models and premium-class European and American trucks. MAN Truck & Bus Africa recently announced notable upgrades to the VW truck range which include uprated front axle specifications and an extended warranty.

“The front axles on all models have been uprated to improve payload capacity,” explains Justin Barnard, product manager, VW Trucks. “All four rigid derivatives are now capable of greater gross vehicle mass (GVM) due to the standard fitment of uprated front axles. The VW Constellation 19.320 4x2 truck tractor, for example, has increased its payload potential by nine tons and boasts a GCM of 44 tons, while two of the freight carrier derivatives, the VW 15.180 and the VW 24.250 have increased their payload potential by two to four tons respectively as a direct result of new axle specifications.”

According to Livingstone Mulaudzi, senior product manager, MAN Truck & Bus Africa, “The range has established itself over time in South Africa and we’ve listened long and hard to what our customers are demanding. These axle upgrades, along with wheelbase optimisation on all models, makes the range more versatile and efficient, especially for medium to occasional long-haul distribution applications as well as the tipper market.”

With its focus on lowering total-cost-of-ownership, MAN has also extended the warranty on the VW Constellation range. “All models now come with a 12-month/unlimited mileage warranty on the entire vehicle and a 24-month/unlimited mileage warranty on the driveline,” says Barnard.

As part of the MAN dealer network, VW Constellation customers are supported by 28 service centres around the country, with dedicated VW Constellation sales executives at major branches who ensure correct vehicle specification and comprehensive aftersales support, says Mulaudzi: “2011 is going to be the year of the VW Constellation!”
