MAN Builds with Jewson

Jewson, the UK's leading supplier of sustainable timber and building materials, with over 500 branches nationwide, has taken delivery of 37 MAN trucks as part of its first major order for the German marque.

The new trucks are the first vehicles to be delivered for contract covering the supply of 430 vehicles over the next three years. The MANs join the massive Jewson transport fleet of some 1200 trucks.

As part of the company’s ongoing fleet replacement programme, the mixed MAN fleet will feature both 18 and 26 tonne MAN TGM rigids, as well as a number of MAN TGS and MAN TGX tractor units. Bodies fitted to the rigid vehicles are all fitted by Bevans in Birmingham and many feature front or rear-mounted cranes. All the vehicles will be fitted with the company’s own vehicle and driver performance monitoring system.

The order, which has been awarded to MAN as a result of the company’s overall commercial package, will see all the vehicles covered by eight year MAN R&M contracts. The new MAN’s will operate eventually out of Jewson branches sited in most of the major towns across the UK, and will be supported by local MAN customer support centres from the 66-strong MAN network in the UK.

Speaking about the decision to take the MAN trucks, Denis Wellfare, Transport Director for Jewson, said, “We see this order as very much an exploration of just what MAN and its truck range can do for us. Like any major operator we are looking for enhanced performance and reduced operating cost. So, while this is a decent order, we are also treating it as a trial of the vehicles in operation and the support we can get from the manufacturer and its network.”

For MAN Truck & Bus UK, the company’s chief executive Des Evans said, “Jewson is widely recognised as a leader in own-account transport operations, so we are pleased to get this opportunity to show what MAN trucks and our customer support network here in the UK can do for its business. We are confident on both counts and look forward to demonstrating this to Denis and his team.

“Our local Southampton dealer, Harwoods Truck Centre, is already closely involved, having assisted throughout the contract negotiations and now commissioning many of the new Jewson fleet; a prime example of the close working relationship we are beginning to forge between the customer, MAN and our network.”

Sales of MAN trucks grew significantly over the last quarter of 2010 to give MAN a 10% market share in the UK, and the company claims to have a very strong order book already for 2011.
