750th MAN D2676 engine for Alstom’s Coradia Polyvalent delivered in time for Innotrans 2016
Largest ongoing order in Europe; innovative roof-mounted drive system concept
MAN is set to deliver the 750th engine for the Coradia Polyvalent diesel railcar to French train manufacturer Alstom just in time for the Innotrans 2016. All six-cylinder in-line engines of the type MAN D2676 LE 621 that were delivered since 2012, belong to a major contract which is expected to be completed in 2019. It is the largest number of diesel engines for rail vehicles to be ordered and subsequently delivered in Europe so far.
In due recognition of the volume of the order, Günther Zibes, Head of Business Center Rail, and Andrea Bäumler, Key Account Manager, both from MAN Engines, have expressed their personal thanks to Olivier Carnot, Site Managing Director ALSTOM Reichshoffen. To mark the occasion, the representatives of MAN Engines symbolically handed finest Nürnberger Lebkuchen (gingerbread biscuits) to the French team of Alstom.
It’s not just the size of the order that is impressive but also the innovative layout of the entire drive system package, four to six of which, each with an MAN engine, are installed in each railcar unit (DEMU - Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit): The complete drive unit package – comprising a diesel engine and generator, cooling unit, air filter and exhaust system and electrical and electronic systems – is arranged on the roof of the Alstom Coradia Polyvalent. Thanks to this innovative drive concept, it has been possible to achieve an end-to-end low-floor design inside the vehicle. “Not only does this make maintenance easier by providing better access to the drive unit, it also significantly enhances passenger comfort inside the vehicle by eradicating the need for steps,” said Günther Zibes, Head of Business Center Rail at MAN Engines.
Installation of the drive unit package on the roof of the vehicle has been made possible thanks to the compact dimensions and low weight of the vertically-mounted MAN D2676 LE621 engine. The engine dispenses with the need for an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system for exhaust gas after-treatment, as the prescribed limits are already met through internal engine measures, namely EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and a PM catalytic converter. Thanks to two-stage supercharging, the engine provides plentiful torque across the entire engine speed range and generates a power output of up to 338 kW (460 HP). Alstom’s Coradia Polyvalent fleet is the first major fleet of low-floor railcars with roof-mounted engine concept to be introduced to the European market. The Coradia Polyvalent has been in operation with SNCF in France since 2013, serving regional routes with high traffic volumes and short distances between stops.
