MAN long truck to participate in country-wide field trials

Alternative commercial vehicle concepts ease pressure on roads and contribute to CO2 reduction.

The MAN Nutzfahrzeuge "long trucks" are to participate in field trials which will be held right throughout Germany. In doing so, MAN is showing its support for the federal government's objective of combating the rising amount of goods transport early with promising concepts. "Alternative commercial vehicle concepts not only enable expansion of the transport infrastructure in keeping with demand, they also make an enormously important contribution to increasing the capacity of goods transport by road in an eco-friendly manner. MAN is convinced that in long trucks, it is testing a technology of the future that will allow a considerable reduction of CO2 emissions," says Dr Georg Pachta-Reyhofen, CEO of MAN SE and MAN Nutzfahrzeuge.

As stipulated in the coalition agreement, the federal government is starting country-wide field trials of innovative commercial vehicles at the beginning of 2011. More than 200 companies have already registered to take part in the project, which is to run for one year. In many EU countries, maximum truck length is currently restricted to 16.50 metres for semitrailers and 18.75 metres for articulated trains. Manufacturers and operators believe that longer trucks will prove significantly more efficient in goods transport by road. The gross weight of the vehicles will remain unchanged at 40 tonnes (or 44 tonnes in intermodal transport).

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge will be participating in the field trials with two "long trucks". The aim is to obtain important insights into their transport efficiency, especially as far as savings in fuel consumption and CO2 are concerned. For this reason the vehicles are equipped with Telematics systems, which will record all their relevant operating data. The two long trucks consist of components typical of those already used by many customers in the commercial vehicles sector today.

The vehicles are equipped with all available driver assistance systems: in addition to the electronic stability program (ESP), continuous damping control, a lane guard system and adaptive cruise control provide a high degree of safety. The drivers will also be put thought a safety training course at MAN ProfiDrive so that they are prepared for what the long trucks are going to require of them.
