MAN Lion’s Intercity is aimed at customers in the large European standard intercity bus segment. The vehicle is well-appointed for intercity travel and shuttle transport as well as use as a robust school bus. This distinguishes the high-floor bus, which is available in 12 and 13 m length versions, from the Lion’s Regio. A highly efficient 290 hp D08 common rail engine powers the two-axle bus. Depending on which seating option is selected, the Lion’s Intercity has a maximum of 55 seats (59 for Lion’s Intercity C) and a maximum of two wheelchair spaces and one wheelchair lift. The new Lion's Intercity combines first-class comfort with high functionality, and outstanding safety with MAN’s top quality. The vehicle not only sets standards with its striking, aerodynamically optimised design and excellent driving characteristics, but also especially with its efficient fuel consumption and the low life-cycle costs.
Redesigned based on the tried and tested MAN modular concept
MAN Lion's Intercity has been redeveloped from scratch based on the tried and tested MAN modular concept in order to meet customer needs in the standard intercity segment. Overall operating costs were the focus here. As a result, great emphasis was placed on weight-saving design, ease of service and repair as well as low fuel consumption from the MAN D08 common rail engine with 290 hp.
MAN Lion's Intercity: optimum equipment
The MAN Lion’s Intercity has been optimised in all aspects for use as an intercity bus and a school bus and has a practical design which makes it clearly recognisable as a member of the MAN bus family.

Daytime driving lights are provided as standard
The passenger area can be optimally fitted out for the specific use intended with air-conditioning system and curtains. The windows have double glazing as an option. There are separate controls for the heating and air conditioning in the driver workspace and the passenger area. The vehicle comes with vent windows as standard, a high-performance rooftop air-conditioning unit is available as an option. The vehicle has a fan heating system as standard, convection heating is available as an option.
The vehicle provides space for 55 people sitting and 29 standing (Lion’s Intercity), and 59 sitting and 25 standing (Lion’s Intercity C). The seats mounted on the platforms are Intercity Lite models (supplied from Kiel). The Lion’s Intercity has a maximum of 15/14 (left/right) seats, the Lion’s Intercity C a maximum of 16/15.
The flexible modular system allows customers to configure optimum vehicles according to the relevant deployment characteristics, e.g. fully seated or with removable platform to provide space for up to two wheelchairs or standing passengers. The removable platform also allows a pram to be carried.
The bus is easy to access through two pneumatic, outward-opening single-glazed doors; door 2 can optionally be single or double. The doors are activated by sensor or optionally by radio remote control. Three steps make exiting and entering easy and safe, especially designed for using the vehicle as a school bus. A lifting platform at door 2 also allows wheelchair access to the vehicle. The passenger area is bright and generously proportioned. The aisle floor rises slightly at the back with steps in front of the last rows of seats.
The optional luggage compartments are available in two versions: with a solid bottom (as with the coach) or a perforated bottom for greater transparency so you are less likely to leave your luggage behind. The luggage area including luggage compartments is 5.2 m3 (Lion’s Intercity) or 6.4 m3 (Lion’s Intercity C) with lids opened by swinging handles making it easily accessible. The bus has three luggage compartment lids on the left and two on the right.
Optimally suited for the tough working day
The quality of materials, manufacturing and processing on the Lion’s Intercity of course conforms to MAN’s high quality requirements: high-value, long-life plastics with pleasant haptics; surfaces that are tough but easy to maintain and UV resistant (to stop them becoming brittle or fading); solid welds; close-fitting with small, uniform clearances; solid welds and connections to withstand high and frequent loads; optimum corrosion protection by Cathode Dip Painting (CDP). The production site for the Lion’s Intercity, the MAN plant in Ankara, MAN’s largest European bus plant, hosts the most advanced CDP unit in all of MAN’s European plants.
One of the safest in its class
Efficiency, flexibility and above all safety - these are the characteristics that make the new Lion’s Intercity stand out. For use as a school bus, with children on board, a high level of safety is the highest priority.
One of the safest in its class
Efficiency, flexibility and above all safety - these are the characteristics that make the new Lion’s Intercity stand out. For use as a school bus, with chil-dren on board, a high level of safety is the highest priority.
- Compared against its direct competitors, the Lion's Intercity is the only model in this segment to already satisfy standard ECE R66.02, which will enter into force in 2017 and which governs structural robustness in buses and roll-over testing. The newly designed, high-strength steel vehicle skeleton incorporates multiple ring spars. They provide the requisite stability for the body and are key to ensuring that crash energy can be effectively absorbed in the event that the vehicle should roll.
- Safe to operate due to the ergonomic cockpit, where even less ex-perienced drivers will quickly find themselves at home.
- 2-point seatbelts for all seats as standard
- Grab stanchions and handles on seats as standard
- Fire insulation between engine and passenger compartments effec-tively inhibits the spread of a fire from its source in the engine com-partment.
- Fire alarm system as standard (in engine and luggage compart-ments)
- The fire extinguishing system in the engine compartment actively combats fires as they occur.
- Roof hatches as emergency exits as standard; screen-printed glass to attenuate solar radiation. They can optionally be operated manu-ally or electrically.
The scope of the safety equipment on the Lion's Intercity is noticeably wider than that of its competitors: MAN’s Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) (optional); Electronic Braking System (EBS) (standard) with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control System (ASR) and Brake Assist (BA). Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) (standard) consisting of Dynamic Stability Programme (DSP) and Roll-over Protection (ROP). Emergency brake signal/emergency brake indicators and the Tyre Pressure Monitoring system (TPM) and reverse warning signal when reverse gear is engaged are available as options.
MAN Lion's Intercity: The savings star
We have taken action across the board to ensure that the vehicle is as lightweight as possible. Additional weight has been added to the vehicle to make the skeleton compliant with the ECE R66.02 requirements. However, by using more lightweight components, the Lion's Intercity is not the heaviest in its class.
Simply using the lightweight D08 series 6-cylinder engine makes a substantial contribution to the impressive payload. And the new and particularly efficient air-conditioning reduces the weight by 65 kg. By using six aluminium wheels instead of steel wheels (twin tyres on the rear axle), just under 100 kg has been cut from the overall weight. In addition, better thermal conductivity has also helped to increase the service life of the brakes and suspension.
The Lion’s Intercity uses a number of highly effective fuel-saving measures: The automatic Idle Shutdown engine switch-off function minimises exhaust gas and CO2 emissions as well as noise emissions when the vehicle is stationary for long periods. The two-stage compressor, which does not supply air constantly at full operating capacity operates efficiently and frugally. It automatically switches to idling mode if not required. The vehicle’s sophisticated aerodynamic design, with an arched, slightly inclined panoramic windscreen, provides less purchase for cross-winds. Air flows are optimally diverted from the rear trailing edge. This reduces the wind resistance factor to CW 0.4 which has a beneficial effect on consumption.
At lower speeds in urban traffic, air resistance plays only a small role. However, at higher speeds of up to 100 km/h in intercity traffic, it has a significant impact on increasing fuel consumption. MAN combats this with aerodynamics refined in many wind tunnel tests and simulations.
One target during the development of the Lion’s Intercity was to avoid high repair and workshop costs and to reduce vehicle down times. All maintenance points on the bus are therefore easily accessible, making servicing and repair work easier. Daily checks and where required topping up of engine oil and coolant can be carried out in just a few operations. The servicing points can be located easily. The compact construction of the D08 engine, generously proportioned side flaps and angled floor panel provide improved access to the engine compartment. The three-piece front panel and the three-piece rear bumper mean that, in the event of an accident, it may only be necessary to repair or replace the damaged section rather than the entire front section. This saves time and costs. The large, wide-opening middle section of the front panel makes it easy to remove the spare wheel; the front lights are also easily accessible. This means that the lights can be changed quickly.

Quality made in Ankara
MAN plant in Turkey
MAN and NEOPLAN brand city and intercity buses and touring coaches are built at the MAN plant in Ankara, MAN’s largest bus plant. The latest product line is MAN Lion’s Intercity, the jack of all trades in the large European standard intercity bus segment. It is celebrating its premiere at BusDays in Ankara. There are 1,600 employees at the 320,000 square metre plant. Around 1,000 employees are involved in the construction of a coach such as the 14-metre-long, 480 hp MAN Lion’s Coach L Supreme, the luxury travelling headquarters of Bayern Munich Football Club. These include electricians, mechanics, engineers, paint operatives, welders and other specialists in, for example, stickers.
The stages of bus production
Seven vehicles are manufactured per day - on one production line. Key operational steps: The welded skeleton (shell) is precision-measured by laser before being given coatings at the CDP unit (Cathode Dip Painting) giving them protection against corrosion. The CDP unit at the Ankara plant is the most advanced of all of MAN’s European plants. In the next step the exterior panelling is mounted on the skeleton and painted, and mechanical parts such as engine, axles and discs are fitted. The process is completed with the assembly of the interior (cockpit, seat etc.) and finishing (final adjustments, cleaning etc.).
Extensive quality checks, for example at the shell stage, in the CDP unit, during assembly, painting, finishing and test runs ensure the products meet the highest possible quality and safety standards.
The new audit building which was commissioned in 2014 is suitable for all vehicle types. Checks are carried out to VW standard: with special lighting for exterior and interior and improved checks for example of exterior panelling or colour. One bus a week is audited here, manufacturing faults identified and reported to the relevant section for correction. This means that quality standards can be continuously improved.

The history of MAN in Turkey
The history of MAN in Turkey dates back to the late 19th century. MAN began exporting trains and goods wagons to Turkey in 1874. By 1903 MAN was supplying diesel engines, and opened a sales office in Istanbul in 1910. But MAN was also well known in Turkey at the time for an entirely different project: the construction of the Galata Bridge in Istanbul in 1912. MAN had submitted the initial design to the Turkish Naval Ministry back in 1894. But it was not until summer 1910, after repeated delays, that the works began. It took almost two years of manufacturing on a specially built dockyard in the Golden Horn before the bridge was ready to be manoeuvred into position for the dedication ceremony in 1912. MAN had pre-fabricated parts of the two-storey floating bridge at its German factory in Gustavsburg near Mainz. It was then built in Istanbul. The Galata Bridge, built using 8,000 tonnes of steel, became a symbol of modern Turkey, a steel connection between East and West.
In 1966 MAN founded MAN A.S. in Istanbul, MAN’s first production site outside Germany. One year later MAN launched truck production and another year later, in 1968, bus production. At the time, MAN’s tipper truck was a trailblazer. The triple-axle tipper truck, which rolled off the production line in large numbers, was painted red, giving it the nickname “Red Nose”. In 1985 MAN shifted truck production to the capital, Ankara, where MAN already had an engine plant. In 1995 MAN sold the plant in Istanbul to concentrate on manufacturing city buses and touring coaches in Ankara. Truck production was eventually discontinued.
Under the “Evolution 2004” project, annual production was increased from four buses a day to eight per day. In 2006 MAN produced the first bus powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) in Turkey. Today there are around 1,300 MAN CNG buses used for the city of Ankara - the largest CNG fleet in the world. Since 2010 MAN Türkiye has had a research and development centre and since 2011 MAN’s largest CDP unit in Europe.
As part of the drive to reorganise and increase the efficiency of the bus production network, in 2014 bus manufacturing was moved from the NEOPLAN site in Plauen to Ankara. From May 2015, the former NEOPLAN plant in Plauen will take on a new role in the MAN structure: the site is set to become a new Bus Modification Centre (BMC) for MAN and NEOPLAN public transport buses and coaches.

The Ankara plant, MAN's largest bus factory, produces coaches and both city and intercity buses of the MAN and NEOPLAN brands. The latest member of the product family is the MAN Lion's Intercity, designed for the market segment of European standard intercity buses.
Efficient cruising for all coaches
All coaches of the MAN and NEOPLAN brands are optimally equipped with GPS-controlled MAN Tempomat EfficientCruise technology. This makes an important contribution to reducing CO2 production in commercial vehicles. The GPS-based Tempomat calculates uphill and downhill gradients in advance, using on-board 3D map data and the position of the vehicle. It automatically anticipates and controls the speed when driving uphill or downhill in such a way that the momentum of the vehicle is used to save fuel.
MAN with new face
In the spring of 2015, the MAN vehicles of the Lion's Coach, Lion's Regio and Lion's Intercity series will get a new, distinct profile that clearly identifies them as members of the MAN family. The introduction of a glossy, black trim with piano lacquer finish will clearly increase brand recognition and ensure an even more elegant look. A further step towards an integrated family appearance of the MAN brand.
Further developments: EBA emergency brake assist and LGS lane guard system
The new front will cover the advanced EMA emergency brake assist. The second generation of this system will be available in May 2015. MAN is equipping all NEOPLAN vehicles, the MAN Lion's Coach, Lion's Regio buses and from 2016 onwards also the Lion's Intercity buses with this important security feature, even before it becomes a legal requirement. MAN combines the radar-based, distance-controlled Tempomat ACC with the camera of the LGS lane guard system to detect obstacles as early as possible. The second generation of the LGS will also be available in May.
MAN Lion’s Intercity
MAN Lion’s Intercity is aimed at customers in the large European standard intercity bus segment. The vehicle is well-appointed for intercity travel and shuttle transport as well as for use as a robust school bus. Safety takes top priority in the Lion's Intercity, particularly considering its use as a school bus with children on board. A comparison with its direct competitors shows that this vehicle is the only model in this segment that already satisfies the ECE R66.02 standard, which will come into force in 2017 and governs the structural robustness of buses and roll-over tests.
NEOPLAN Tourliner 2+1
The NEOPLAN Tourliner entry model has become the favourite of bus companies since its introduction to the market. This coach has an impressively modern design and elegant equipment and is suitable for short as well as long trips. The NEOPLAN Tourliner 2+1 is a 5-star bus with VIP chairs for 32 passengers Its speciality is the 2+1 seat configuration: The seat rows on the left have individual seats, while the row on the right has double seats. This comfortable arrangement is already very successfully used by long-distance business travel operators in Turkey. In Europe, MAN offers this configuration only in the Starliner, which will no longer be offered in future.
NEOPLAN Skyliner: The flagship of the coach range is back
MAN is continuing its 40-year success story with the NEOPLAN Skyliner. This premium class double-decker will be available in the Euro 6 variant from mid-2015. The award-winning "Sharp Cut Design" guarantees aerodynamic top performance. Fuel savings of up to five percent can be achieved in comparison with double-deckers without aerodynamically-optimised designs. The drag coefficient cd = 0.41 is comparable to that of a modern middle-class van. The NEOPLAN Skyliner also scores by having the lowest CO2 output per passenger in this segment.
NEOPLAN Cityliner
The NEOPLAN Cityliner, which has been characterised by the award-winning NEOPLAN "Sharp Cut Design" since 2006, has shaped the European coach market and is now a real best-seller among high-decker coaches. It has a TÜV-certified fuel consumption of only 19.8 litres per 100 km and is therefore a record-breaking bus.
NEOPLAN Jetliner
The NEOPLAN Jetliner won the German Design Award in 2015. It is the entry-level model of the NEOPLAN VIP Class and combines the premium comfort of NEOPLAN coaches with the qualities of an economical intercity and public transport bus. A storage compartment with a volume of up to 8 m³ offers ample space for luggage. The entrance height facilitates easy boarding and exiting. The floor height of 1 070 mm makes it usable as a real multi-function bus. The Jetliner can be individually reconfigured according to its application, e.g. as a school bus or for weekend excursions.
MAN Lion’s Regio
The MAN Lion's Regio and the new Lion's Intercity are both part of the intercity product segment. The Lion's Intercity is fully geared for use in intercity and feeder traffic and as a rugged school bus, while the Lion's Regio offers flexible equipment options - for coach applications as well as for weekend trips.
The Lion's Regio is a genuine all-rounder for various applications and has received several awards: It has been chosen seven times in a row as Intercity Bus of the Year by the well-known ETM Publishers.
MAN Lion’s Coach
The MAN Lion's Coach is an established high-decker coach. It has a luggage compartment volume of 10 to 11.5 m3 and offers plenty of room for travel luggage.
The MAN Lion's Coach EfficientLine is designed for maximum economy and maximum environmental protection: This coach series particularly comes to the fore in long-distance travel, as it has a multitude of efficiency-increasing features. In addition, it offers considerable comfort, minimal total costs of ownership (TCO) and excellent CO2 efficiency. Higher vehicle service life, reduced maintenance and repair costs as well as low fuel consumption all have a positive effect on the balance sheet. The vehicle therefore scores in two ways: it is economical for the owner and comfortable for the passenger.
City buses of the MAN Lion’s City series
The Ankara plant is the main production site for coaches and intercity buses of the MAN and NEOPLAN brands. The main production site for city buses is Poland. The Ankara plant can also build all MAN Lion's City types except hybrid buses.
MAN intends to maintain short delivery times and high reliability of delivery even at times of peak demand and to provide its customers with optimal service. The plants are therefore flexibly structured and can produce the series normally produced at the other plant with high efficiency and equal quality.
MAN has a wide-ranging city bus portfolio that covers the transport requirements of different cities. This includes the transport capacity aspect such as vehicle length and vehicle concepts (number of doors, internal design, low-floor, low-entry) as well as different drive types. MAN already has mature, sustainable, CO2-efficient and economical future technologies as standard features in the MAN Lion's City hybrid and in a wide range of natural gas (CNG) buses. This is also reflected in the fleet of the EGO local bus operator in Ankara: The MAN component of the EGO fleet is 77%. 74% of the vehicles are CNG buses, all of them from MAN.
