500th MAN bus for Cape Town

Golden Arrow Bus Services Pty. Ltd. operates South Africa's biggest fleet of MAN buses

Golden Arrow Bus Services Pty. Ltd. put the 500th MAN bus into operation and now operates South Africa's biggest fleet of MAN buses.

Golden Arrow Bus Services Pty. Ltd. (GABS) with its over 1,000 buses provides local public transport exclusively to the South African metropolis of Cape Town. Already almost half the vehicles in the GABS fleet have the MAN lion on their radiator grilles. The 500th MAN bus for GABS was handed over recently as one of an order for a further 84 to be delivered by December this year. The vehicles are Type 18.240 FOCR and are being assembled at the MAN bus assembly plant in Olifantsfontein in the province of Gauteng.

"Our decade-long partnership with MAN has resulted in some important developments that directly benefit our customers. The most important progress arising out of our partnership is the significant improvement in our vehicles' consumption - this enables us to lower the prices of tickets for our passengers," emphasizes Nic Cronje, CEO of GABS.

MAN Truck & Bus Ltd. is headquartered in Johannesburg and has two production sites in South Africa. MAN and VW brand trucks are assembled in Pinetown, as are MAN bus chassis. In the Olifantsfontein plant the buses from Pinetown are fitted with bodies. With around 1,000 employees in sales, administration and production, MAN Truck & Bus (S.A.) Ltd. sold approximately 1,600 trucks and 550 buses in 2010.

The company's objective for 2011 is clear leadership in the local bus market with its MAN and Volkswagen brands. Over the same period the newly launched TGS WW is also expected to increase MTB's share of the truck market significantly.

"This successful partnership underscores the trust that GABS has in our products and services. With our range of efficient solutions we are helping to achieve the government's goals and are making a major contribution to improving local public transport in the Western Cape," says Markus Geyer, CEO MAN Truck & Bus (S.A.) Ltd.

GABS buses serve approximately 900 routes in Cape Town. The fleet clocks up more than 62 million kilometres a year while transporting around 56 million passengers.
