“We help our customers to make their business simpler, more profitable, more sustainable and future-proof.”
“Electric mobility, digitalisation, autonomous driving – many of our customers want to be more informed when it comes to these topics. At the IAA we want to provide simple answers to complex questions,” says Joachim Drees, Chairman of the Executive Board at MAN Truck & Bus AG. “To do so, we create solutions tailored to the needs of our customers and help them to make their businesses simpler, more profitable, more sustainable and future-proof.” MAN has therefore developed new vehicles and is also introducing digital solutions to the specialist audience in Hanover. These digital solutions help to optimise vehicle analysis and maintenance management, for example.
“The future of goods and passenger transport in the city is electric.”
At the IAA, MAN showcased the MAN eTGE, a battery-electric version of the new MAN van, in addition to a fully electric distribution truck, the MAN eTGM. MAN is one of the first manufacturers to present fully electric solutions for the entire field of city logistics between 3 and 26 tonnes. Joachim Drees believes this is the most important application area for electrically driven commercial vehicles: “Urban areas are the best stage for e-trucks to demonstrate their strengths. They are emissions-free locally, and thus contribute to improving the air quality in cities. They are also very quiet, which means in the future, for example, delivering to supermarkets could be done at night – day-time traffic could be reduced. We believe that the future of goods and passenger transport in the city is electric”.
The trade show highlight is the MAN CitE, an electrically driven city truck full of new ideas and creative solutions. The 15-tonne vehicle (which was only developed in just 18 months) was uncompromisingly designed for inner city distribution transport.
Due to the fact that delivery drivers in urban areas can enter and exit their vehicles up to 30 times a day, the CitE has an unusually low entry height and especially wide doors; the co-driver's door opens at the press of a button. The cockpit is ergonomic perfection, affording the driver an excellent panoramic view due to a low seat position and large side windows.
Additionally, the CitE employs a 360-degree camera system to provide the greatest possible level of safety and to eliminate dangerous blind spots. The CitE is purely electrically driven. It has a range of 100 kilometres – more than enough for delivery transport in the city.
Joachim Drees says: “The CitE is more than a vehicle concept; it’s our answer to the requirements of goods transport in the city.”
Even for city buses, the path clearly leads to them being electrically driven. This is the reason why MAN has formed development partnerships with locations including Munich, Hamburg, Wolfsburg and Luxembourg – to allow daily experiences to be incorporated into series development. A close-to-series prototype of the MAN Lion’s City E is also making its début at this year’s IAA.
The electric bus is driven by a central motor on the driven axle, which allows space for an optimised seating area in the rear, providing the bus with up to four additional seats.
The batteries are crash-proof, located on the roof to save space, allow for a range of up to 270 kilometres and can be charged in just three hours.
The next step takes place in 2020, when a demo fleet of electric buses will be tested in different European cities in every day use, before series production of the battery-electric version of the new MAN Lion’s City will finally begin. This comprehensive testing ensures that the vehicles are highly reliable, as is needed for public transport.
“Platooning reduces CO2 emissions and ensures noticeably more safety on the motorway.”
The truck platooning developed by MAN is already undergoing practical testing. An electronic drawbar connects two or more trucks together here; the first truck determines the speed and direction, the truck behind automatically follows at a very short distance of only about 10-15 metres. The convoy saves up to ten per cent in fuel by using slipstreams. There is also a driver in the following vehicle so that, if required, they can intervene and override the system. “Platooning significantly reduces CO2 emissions and also ensures noticeably more safety on the motorway. It only takes 5 milliseconds for the electronic system of the following truck to react to the brake impulse of the vehicle in front – faster than any human can. This technology has the potential to significantly reduce the number of serious rear-end collisions on the motorway,” says Drees.
Since the end of June, an MAN platoon has been carrying out trips on the A9 motorway between Munich and Nuremberg as part of a pilot project. Together with DB Schenker, the commercial vehicle manufacturer is testing how this technology performs in real road traffic. The field trial is being monitored by the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences, which is investigating the effects on the drivers.
The automatic emergency braking assistant (which can no longer be deactivated in trucks and buses/coaches as standard) provides increased safety, along with the camera monitor system which allows drivers to make turns more easily and is expected to prevent serious accidents due to blind spots.
The MAN aFAS system, which was shown at the TRATON stand at the trade show, has already proven its implementation-readiness. Due to repeated, serious rear-end collisions on motorways involving rolling safety vehicles, MAN has digitally linked two vehicles, so that the rear safety vehicle can be operated without a driver.
“MAN is transforming itself from commercial vehicle manufacturer to supplier of intelligent and sustainable transport solutions.”
Digital innovations are a focus of MAN’s trade show appearance. “MAN is transforming itself from commercial vehicle manufacturer to supplier of intelligent and sustainable transport solutions,” says Joachim Drees. This is why MAN founded the digital brand RIO in 2016, to connect the world of transportation through an open, cloud-based platform, thereby making it more efficient as well as more environmentally friendly. In order to emphasise the multi-manufacturer-compatible and open approach, RIO has been its own, independent brand under the TRATON GROUP umbrella since 2017.
Building on this platform, MAN offers its customers the first digital solutions tailored to MAN vehicles under the name “MAN DigitalServices”. In the future, this will allow MAN customers to receive real-time and location-independent insights into the vehicle data and analyses derived from said data, allowing for recommendations for action to be created which are specific to them and their vehicles. MAN has introduced additional services for optimising the vehicle analysis and maintenance management at the IAA 2018. With RIO as a strategic partner, MAN customers benefit from digital vehicle services; fleet management is simplified for them, and their businesses made more profitable. Operators of mixed fleets will also receive a uniform basis of digital logistics services for the entire fleet – regardless of vehicle brand.
MAN Innovations at the IAA 2018
The industry trade fair takes place every two years in Hanover. In addition to current product highlights in the truck and bus sector, MAN was particularly focussed on introducing developments in the fields of electric mobility, digitalisation and autonomous driving.
Lion electrifies: MAN CitE sets the benchmark in delivery of the City
Lion electrifies: MAN CitE sets the benchmark in delivery of the City
At the IAA 2018, MAN Truck & Bus is presenting the MAN CitE that has been designed specifically for city cargo traffic. The 15 ton vehicle is characterised by its ergonomic design with very low access, continuous level driver cab floor and easy accessibility. The low sitting position, generous glass surfaces as well as assisting cameras also provide an all-around safe view of the surrounding traffic situations for the driver and passenger. The new electric truck concept that was created in only 18 months sets the benchmark in work place ergonomics, safety and sustainability in city distribution transport.

With regard to the topics of traffic and life quality, cities facing increasing challenges. Until 2050, urban population will increase by 50 percent world wide. This growth means, in particular, more and more delivery and disposal traffic, noise, congestion and emissions. The result is more strict laws and guidelines. The providers of transport services must adopt their work processes to this and, at the same time, take account of the increasing demand for transport. How will goods be transported to the businesses in the city despite stricter noise and emission restrictions? How can accidents and collision damage be avoided in city traffic that is increasing in density. What can make the daily work of the driver easier when they have to get in and out of their vehicle dozens of times during their tour? With the CitE, MAN presents a distribution vehicle that is an answer to this.
MAN CitE: Focus on ergonomics
The entry on the drivers side is particularly easy and comortable on the 350 mm low step. Thanks to the level drivers cab floor slightly pulled in, the driver can take place on the seat and then swing their legs in. The completely level drivers cab floor provides maximum freedom of movement in the cab. The driver has a free passage to the passenger side. Here, with its large swivel sliding door that is opened electrically, CitE provides especially when parking in the second row the best working conditions.
It opens over the complete width and height of the doorway. The co-driver’s seat folds up automatically and provides additional space for the passage. In this way, the driver can get in and out standing upright and without effort, without having to hold on to anything. This is an indispensable benefit for many deliver addresses per tour. When opening, the sliding door also only needs a little space to the side. This also allows unloading in narrow parking places or when stopping in second lines without any problems.
The CitE is also a master of ergonomics when travelling. All displays around the driver's workplace are in the direct field of vision. The display has been designed fully digital for the optimum visualisation of all information for the driver. The switches arranged logically according to how frequently they are used are easily reached from a normal sitting position, as well as the cup holder and stowage trays.
The shelves in the immediate vicinity of the driver's workplace are numerous more. This includes a holder in the middle area, behind which a cool box or a drinks box can be safely stowed. Behind this, on the back wall, the driver has a spacious storage available. On both wheel arches, the driver finds shelves, e.g. for a bag. A cup holder is conveniently located directly on the driver's seat. Further down, a clipboard with shipping papers can be safely stowed. Above the driver there is also a large roof shelf with an open pulled-around compartment above the door. Another large shelf in the dashboard extends to the passenger side. Shipping documents also find a safe place directly on the dashboard. In the lower part of the door panel is a large bowl integrated, which can also accommodate 2 bottles (up to 1.5 liters of PET bottle). Above the door handle is an additional small open shelf. So that the driver can find his way easily even at night, the cabin is optimally illuminated for work. These include the cabin lighting as well as lighting for the shelves. A universal tablet / smartphone holder in the dashboard is available within the immediate sight and reach of the driver. This makes it possible to integrate a customized tablet or smartphone into the driver's workstation in such a way that the logistical and goods flow-oriented processes are optimally integrated into the workflow. Detached from the vehicle, the device can be operated in the customer's own network. USB charging sockets are provided immediately next to the holder. Thus, customer-related functions for the fleet, such as a digital delivery note, are optimally integrated into the workflow.
The air conditioning of the CitE is designed for the particular requirements in city delivery traffic. The driver gets in and out many times per tour and is always on the move. The doors are opened frequently. Heat escapes in winter and cooling requirement increases in summer - this means an undesired loss of energy for an electric vehicle. For this purpose, the air conditioning concept of the MAN CitE applies a reduced cab air conditioning and instead of that, contact heat or ventilation through the driver's seat. In the summer months, the heat and sweat is transported away by the ventilation, in the winter months, the immediate heat is pleasant through the seat and relieves the musculoskeletal system. When the weather is cold, an additional steering wheel heating warms the drivers hands.
MAN CitE: All-round safety
With a city delivery vehicle, safety means, in particular, unrestricted view over the surrounding traffic and other road users. Direct eye contact with cyclists and pedestrians is particularly important for the driver in order to assess situations correctly, e.g. when making turns. MAN has considered this criterion consequently with the design of the CitE. The very low window surfaces all-round provide the driver with a maximum direct view to the outside. Thanks to the low sitting position, they have a viewing contact with pedestrians or cyclists at eye level. To provide them with a free view over the traffic light systems and signs mounted high, the windscreen field of vision is high on the passenger side. As the view to the front and sides is not only important in dense urban traffic, but also what is happening around the vehicle, the driver in the CitE 18 is also provided with a 360 degree birds-eye view camera system. A panoramic view from the birds-eye view around the entire vehicle is shown on the large central display of the integrated entertainment and navigation system. Pedestrians or cyclists as well as other obstacles such as parked vehicles and thus when driving slowly and manoeuvring, are always in the view of the driver. Being an effective measure against accidents that are caused by blind spots, the CitE is also equipped with a new mirror replacement system. In doing so, camera on both sides of the vehicle provide live images on two displays installed in the field of vision of the driver and thus reduce the blind spots. At a glance, the driver can assess the complete situation that would otherwise require a rear-view, wide angle and kerb mirror. Depending on the daylight, the camera technology used permits a high-resolution representation of the surroundings so that the driver has a better view at night and with variable light conditions. Moreover, the limitations are reduced compared with a mirror, e.g. fogging up, dirt or being blinded by the sun. This increases safety additionally and, at the same time, reduces the probability of collision damage and thus repair costs.
MAN CitE: Fully-electric through the city
MAN has consequently designed the CitE as electrically driven city delivery vehicle. As the diesel drive train with a combustion engine over the front axle is no longer required, this permits the design of a low-floor vehicle with very low floor and maximum freedom of movement for the driver in the cab. The drive of the CitE is taken over by a centrally arranged electric motor from the eMobility module of MAN. The lithium ion batteries are located under the vehicle frame and enable a range of at least 100 kilometres - sufficient for a day tour in city delivery traffic. The chassis is completely cladded which increases safety for other road users additionally. Moreover, this guarantees a better protection of the batteries in event of an accident. The clear goal of the CitE was, despite its individual concept with standard superstructures, that it could still be equipped with conventional constructions. Basically, the CitE can therefore be considered for all superstructure applications typical for city delivery traffic; the main focus however, is the dry freight bodies for the distribution of products and goods to small businesses. The MAN CitE is also equipped with special design tyres from Continental. The tyre study Conti e.MotionPro matched specifically to the layout of the CitE is equipped with a specially manufactured tread and with its distinctive blue stripes on the side wall and blue groove bottom on the tread, fits perfectly to the design of the CitE.
MAN CitE: Impossible made possible!
Being a vehicle concept, the MAN CitE is not only a completely new approach with many innovative ideas that deviate from the conventional vehicles. With its creation, the developers even took completely new paths. As at the beginning, it looked like the project requirements could not be implemented. A completely newly developed drivable electric truck that is consequently designed for the requirements of city distribution traffic should be developed in less than two years - normally a project that takes five years, from the first sketches to revealing the finished vehicle. It was quickly clear to the development team that this is only possible with innovative approaches of the work organisation. They found the solution in the software development sector, with their comparatively short product development cycles. In doing so, agile work methods were the key to control complicated projects flexibly, keep the bureaucratic effort as low as possible and to build up less flexible rules. A cross-functional team was drafted on this basis that, with the agile scrum method, organised their work flexibly and dynamically. Reviews with project participants at regular intervals accelerated the decision processes significantly. Using this agile approach, the MAN CitE could thus be implemented in a period of only 18 months and finally presented ready to drive at the IAA 2018. This success is the exceptional performance of a highly motivated team that, with the MAN CitE, have set new benchmarks for safety, work place ergonomics and sustainability in city distribution traffic. MAN will initially present the CitE to the public at the IAA 2018. With respective positive response and queries, the production of further vehicles on the basis of the MAN CitE is a possible option.
Platooning in the logistics industry: world's first practical use of networked truck convoys in Germany
Platooning in the logistics industry: world's first practical use of networked truck convoys in Germany
Research project of DB Schenker, MAN Truck & Bus, and Hochschule Fresenius started in the test phase on the A9 highway.
- Strategic partnerships as innovation drivers
- Unprecedented use of technology
- People still top priority
As the world's first logistics provider, DB Schenker, together with its cooperation partners MAN Truck & Bus and Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences, sent on June 25th 2018 two digitally networked trucks into practical use.
In the presence of Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Andreas Scheuer, a truck "platoon" set off from the DB Schenker branch office in Neufahrn near Munich via the A9 digital test field to Nuremberg. The federal government is funding the pilot project with around EUR 2 million.
Federal Transportation Minister Andreas Scheuer said: "This is a visionary research project for our digital test site, the A9 highway. The project marks the start of the automated and networked future of road haulage. We bring tomorrow's technology onto today's roads, testing the intelligent interaction of man, machine and material. Our opportunities: logistics processes – from ramp to customer – can become safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly. And truck drivers can become modern logistics specialists in digital trucks.”
Strategic partnerships as innovation drivers
The regular test runs of the networked trucks began on June 25th, along the 145-kilometer route. Trials are being carried out without any loads until early August. After that, the platoons will be on the road every day, making up to three routine logistics trips and laden with part loads of, for example, machine parts, drinks, or paper.
The project partners are thus doing pioneering work. "This first use of truck platoons in Germany will set new standards in the logistics market, from which our customers will benefit first and foremost," said Alexander Doll, DB Board Member for Freight Transport and Logistics. "With this project, DB Schenker is showing what matters for companies all over the world in the future: advancing innovations through new partnerships."
By using this technology, DB Schenker is expanding its digital business model. "Today, we at DB are once again bringing a new technology to the road. With the platooning project, we are further expanding our pioneering role in the field of autonomous and networked driving," emphasized Prof. Dr. Sabina Jeschke, DB Board Member for Digitalization and Technology.
With MAN Truck & Bus and DB Schenker, two of the world's leading companies in their sectors are cooperating to jointly promote the subject of automated driving. "It's not just about using a technology. It's about integrating it effectively into the entire logistics chain. The findings from the joint project are an important step towards series development. This will give MAN a leading role in the automation and digitization of commercial vehicles," said Joachim Drees, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus AG.
Unprecedented use of technology
During the unprecedented practical tests, the platooning technology for logistics use will be further optimized, for example with regard to system safety, fuel consumption, and better use of space on freeways. The project partners also hope to gain insights into the social acceptance of the networked driving style, as well as into transport policy and infrastructural prerequisites.
People still top priority
Since the collaboration began in May 2017 and the official handover of the test vehicles by MAN in February of this year, the truck drivers have been prepared for their role in the project through intensive training. The psychosocial and neurophysiological effects of the new technology on the drivers in the platoon will be examined by Hochschule Fresenius with an accompanying study. This will allow important experiences of the truck drivers to be incorporated and their job profile developed further. "It's obvious that digitization of the mobility and transport system is leading to completely new requirements for employees in the industry," said Prof. Dr. Christian Haas, Director of the Institute for Complex Health Research at Hochschule Fresenius. We hope that our findings can also contribute to a better understanding and design of other digitized human machine interfaces."
Functionality of platooning
The term "platooning" refers to a system that vehicles use on the road in which at least two trucks drive in a tight convoy on a freeway, supported by technical driving assistance and control systems. All of the vehicles in the platoon are linked to each other by an electronic "drawbar" that uses vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The truck in front sets the speed and direction, and the others follow.
Backup – MAN develops driverless safety vehicle for motorway roadworks
Backup – MAN develops driverless safety vehicle for motorway roadworks
Around 44 percent of all accidents on Germany’s motorways involving trucks occur in the inside lane or on the hard-shoulder. Collisions with safety vehicles protecting the rear end of rolling roadworks are a regular feature of these incidents. Even though the distinctive orange-coloured highway agency vehicles pull a trailer with a four metre high illuminated hazard warning and lane closure sign, they are sometimes overlooked or noticed too late – sadly with often serious consequences.
- “aFAS” research project investigating technical feasibility of automated driving
- MAN and seven partners from industry, scientific research and public administration paving the way for future transport
- MAN TGM 18.340 being piloted as a driverless safety vehicle on motorways
- Project successfully completed in June 2018
This led MAN Truck & Bus and seven partners from the worlds of industry, scientific research and public administration to develop a ground-breaking mobile solution to this risk through the “aFAS” research project. Titled Rückendeckung (Backup), it eliminates the need for a human driver in hazardous situations. “aFAS” is an abbreviation for the German phrase meaning “automatic driverless safety vehicle for motorway roadworks”. As that description indicates, the project involves the design of a prototype safety vehicle capable of following rolling roadworks along the hard-shoulder of the motorway entirely automatically, with no driver required, protecting the on-site personnel and other works vehicles from the flowing traffic.
The four-year research project was launched back in 2014 and designed to run for four years, financed by funding of some €3.4 million in total from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The project represented the first complete technical feasibility study for such a vehicle, as well as considering the extent to which current standards and legislation would have to be amended – plus, needless to say, the impact it would have on public roads in live operation.
MAN developed the automated safety vehicle in cooperation with other technical project partners, itself being responsible for driving functionality, wireless communications, the HMI (Human Machine Interface) and the complete vehicle specification.
The test vehicle was a MAN TGM 18.340, fitted out with cameras and radar systems to provide all-round visibility and sensing, as well as various assistance systems. The steering and braking systems, sensors and control software also had to meet the most stringent criteria. The prototype vehicle was largely built using mass production components, both for its regular control systems and in implementing functional safety aspects. An additional specially developed all-round sensor system featuring high levels of safety and an integrated, highly reliable object and lane detection system also enabled analysis of road and traffic situation data. The data communication between the working vehicle at the front and the safety vehicle at the rear was wireless, and displays were installed in both vehicles to indicate the operating state of the driverless prototype.
After the driver has activated all the systems and climbed out of the cab, the TGM steers, accelerates and brakes autonomously, following the vehicle ahead at a defined distance. In the event of a malfunction, it automatically comes to a stop. When passing by critical locations such as entry or exit slip-roads, the prototype can be brought to within a few metres of the lead vehicle and digitally “coupled” to it.
In the early years of the project, the system initially underwent trials on MAN test tracks, then in the second half of 2017 on closed stretches of roadworks on motorways in the state of Hesse, before the vehicle was returned to its developers in Munich. The MAN TGM prototype was further optimised based on the experience gained in this process, and has been running in a real-world pilot on motorways in Hesse since early April 2018.
The “aFAS” project was successfully completed in June. The findings from it will be incorporated into MAN’s future production development, and into further testing and research projects relating to automated and autonomous driving (such as platooning).
Transport 4.0 – Fleet Management of the Future Begins with new MAN DigitalServices
Transport 4.0 – Fleet Management of the Future Begins with new MAN DigitalServices
By launching the new MAN DigitalServices group division, MAN is offering customised digital services and applications exclusively for MAN vehicles. The comprehensive MAN DigitalServices are based on RIO, the cloud-based, open logistics platform, and mixed fleet operators can use them to connect (and, in turn, more efficiently use) their MAN vehicles and other brands at all levels. At the same time, the MAN DigitalServices applications are expressly designed to be functional, suitable for day-to-day operations and extremely user-friendly.
- MAN DigitalServices based the on RIO platform, exclusively for MAN vehicles
- MAN DigitalServices offers an extensive range of applications for sustainable fleet management
- Intelligent digital services make modern fleets even more cost-effective and environmentally friendly
Charged with the task mastering future economic challenges while meeting constantly growing environmental and social requirements, the transport industry in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution faces a complex series of tasks that entail far more than simply “moving goods from A to B”. Digitalisation, efficient fleet management, synergy effects and universal connectedness are the catchwords when it comes to long-term competitiveness among transport companies. In these areas, MAN DigitalServices can support its customers with a constantly growing range of digital services perfectly tailored to MAN vehicles. They help to keep track of and optimise all the factors that contribute to the total cost of ownership (TCO).
MAN DigitalServices builds on RIO, the cloud-based digital platform for logistics applications, which MAN presented at the International Motor Show in 2016. This connectivity solution for the transport industry also includes the RIO Box hardware, which is open to different systems and manufacturers, and has proven so successful that it is even being installed in other vehicle brands.
The RIO Box is installed as standard in all new MAN Euro 6 model series trucks, and their owners can use the basic digital functions of MAN Essentials free of charge after registering on the RIO platform. The user receives a wide variety of information about the vehicle at hand from their computer, such as its current location (also displayed on a digital map), current speed, mileage, service life, average speed and weight, as well as an analysis of its fuel consumption. This data can be retrieved for up to 10 days. The “Advance” package makes it possible to analyse other data. This expansion is available via an online shop, the MAN Marketplace.
The MAN ServiceCare application provides customers with a proactive tool for perfect maintenance management of their fleet. The RIO Box delivers all the vehicle’s maintenance-related data to MAN ServiceCare. The user and the MAN workshop responsible for their vehicle automatically receive information about service intervals or the need to service wear components in the near future. This way, the fleet owner can view the current status of their vehicles, wherever they may be located. Meanwhile, the workshop receives a status overview via MAN ServiceCare and can arrange an appointment for their customers early on. Service signals unexpectedly flashing on the display, long stationary times in the workshop and waiting for spare parts are relics from the analogue era.
Needless to say, MAN ServiceCare is always undergoing further development with a clear focus on real, day-to-day customer needs. One of the first additional benefits is remote truck diagnosis. This makes it possible to isolate the cause of a potential failure to such an extent that the mechanic can, before setting off, decide whether a repair can be performed on site and which spare parts and tools they will need to bring along. This saves valuable time and money in emergencies.
But MAN DigitalServices has its eye on more than just vehicles; it also addresses the industry’s social and administrative requirements. The MAN Compliant application allows users to fully automatically download all the data from the vehicle’s digital tachograph (driver card every seven days, mass storage unit every 30 days), no matter where they are. Previously, this was only possible on site; for instance, at the company’s offices. This also has an advanced feature which can be used to store, analyse and manage the data for up to 25 months. This complies with the legally stipulated two-year period during which transport companies must retain data.

MAN Truck & Bus AG Corporate Portrait
MAN Truck & Bus AG Corporate Portrait
MAN Truck & Bus is one of the leading European commercial vehicle manufacturers and transport solution providers. It was over 100 years ago that the company, which belongs to TRATON AG, began production of the first trucks and coaches. In 2017, MAN Truck & Bus had more than 36,000 employees worldwide, sold 90,000 vehicles and generated 10 Billion Euros in revenue. Its product portfolio includes vans, trucks, buses/coaches and diesel and gas engines, along with services relating to passenger and cargo transport.
Innovations: e-mobility, autonomous driving and digitalisation
MAN is committed today to the advances of tomorrow. Reflecting this cutting-edge role, MAN presents an all-electric distribution truck as well as a prototype of the MAN Lion’s City E bus and the battery-electric variant of the new MAN van at the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicles Show.
As a global first, MAN joined forces with DB Schenker in June 2018 to pilot the latest in automated truck driving: "platooning", which involves two connected trucks running in convoy on Germany's A9 motorway. The first truck dictates the speed and direction, while the second follows behind automatically just 15 metres or so away. The convoy uses the first vehicle's slipstream to cut fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent.
MAN is evolving from a commercial vehicle manufacturer into a provider of intelligent and sustainable transport solutions. Under the brand name "MAN DigitalServices", MAN has begun offering its customers digital solutions specially tailored to MAN vehicles. In future, this will provide customers with access to their vehicle data in real time, wherever the vehicle may be. On that basis, recommendations can then be made based on the vehicle and the customers' needs. MAN will be presenting more services to optimise vehicle analytics and maintenance management procedures at the 2018 IAA.
Sites on several continents
With the introduction of the MAN TGE van in the autumn of 2016, MAN expanded its product range and is now a full-range supplier, covering all weight classes. The products range from the vans with a gross weight of 3.0 to 5.5 tonnes, through trucks with a gross weight of 7.49 to 44 tonnes, to heavy special purpose vehicles with a gross train weight of up to 250 tonnes. The company also produces city buses, intercity buses, coaches and bus chassis for the MAN brand, and luxury coaches for the NEOPLAN brand. The product portfolio also includes industrial engines for marine, on-road and off-road applications and a comprehensive range of services linked to mobility. In Germany, the company runs production sites in Munich and Nuremburg, together with its component manufacturing and logistics site in Salzgitter. In addition, it implements special customer requests at its Truck Modification Centres in Wittlich, Steyr and Munich and its Bus Modification Centre in Plauen. It also has additional manufacturing sites in Steyr (Austria), St Petersburg (Russia) and Starachowice and Cracow (Poland). Further afield, it operates production sites in Ankara (Turkey) and the South African cities of Olifantsfontein and Pinetown.
Broad range of trucks
The MAN truck programme ranges from the TGL (7.49 to 12 tonnes) to the medium series TGM (12 to 26 tonnes) through to the TGS and TGX series with permissible gross weights of 18 to 44 tonnes. TGS is a series of robust trucks with a permitted gross vehicle weight of 18 to 41 tonnes designed for export markets, specifically Russia, Asia and Africa. The driveline of the TG model series ensure for an even more efficient fuel consumption at higher performance and driving dynamics as well as the familiar high reliability. The D38 engine offers up to 640 HP in its strongest version and already reaches its up to 3,000 Nm high torque at low engine speed. The D26 engine has been optimised for fleet applications, offers a performance spectrum of 420 to 500 HP with equally low own weight and low fuel consumption. In combination with the tine-tuned MAN TipMatic gearbox with individual driving program for every application as well as the sensitive starting as well as efficient and equally application-orientated switching strategy, the heavy MAN model series TGS and TGX are also equipped with efficient, economical and environmentally protecting drivelines. In the middle truck segment, the MAN TGL and TGM are driving with the new D08 engine presented at the end of 2017 with outputs of 160, 190 and 220 HP in four-cylinder variants and 250, 290 and 320 HP in six-cylinder variants. The new MAN D08 engine generation is characterised by its pure SCR technology based on exhaust gas aftertreatment and a more simple assembly. This extends the application spectrum, serves maintenance-friendliness as well as increases reliability. Moreover, with the new units, MAN could reduce the consumption by a further 5.5 percent. With the extended starting and switching strategy for the TipMatic gearbox with 6 and 12 speeds introduced with the current D08 generation, driving comfort and efficiency are also provided with the TGL and TGM. For the IAA 2018, MAN is also presenting a switching software for the MAN TipMatic 12+2 gearbox which has been optimised even further that, in combination with the D26 engine, is used in the model series TGS and TGX. This reduces the gearshifts with the average speed remaining the same, reduces the average engine speed and uses higher gears more frequently. This contributes sustainably to a further reduction of the fuel consumption. As of the IAA, the MAN TipMatic 12-speed that was only available for the European standard Euro 6 is also available for vehicles of Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standard. For the model series TGX and TGS of Euro 6 to Euro 2 emission standard, MAN also offers the new version of the manually operated gearbox, Ecosplit 4.
Optimum operating comfort and high living quality for the driver
The new features inside the driver cab interior that were introduced at the end of 2017 and transferred to series in 2018 make working and living for the drivers in trucks of the TG model series even more comfortable. Whereas the optimised interior design of the short C and M drivers cabs places its focus on the application and driver tasks, in particular everything concerning the work place, the drivers of the longer L, LX, XL, XLX and XXL drivers cabs, as used in particular in the MAN TGX and TGS, profit additionally from a redesign of the living area. In addition to the fridges that can be lowered under the bed, this includes an optimised shelf and lamp offer especially for the resting section. All important comfort functions can be controlled via the centralised operating concept. Moreover, an acoustic package ensures for restful sleep in the TGX model series that with the comprehensive insulating measures, noticeably reduces the noise level in the cab. Especially for applications in the traction sector there is also the new cab interior optionally available in the dirt-resistant interior colour Urban Concrete.
Driver relief and safety first and foremost
To ensure that congestion situations and slow-moving traffic do not cause fatigue to the driver, MAN offers the Adaptive Cruise Control ACC with a Stop-and-Go function. It controls the distance to the vehicles ahead and at low speeds, and if necessary, automatically brakes the vehicle to standstill and with short stops, also drives away again independently. This allows the driver to also travel along relaxed and stress-free in Stop-and-Go traffic. In addition to the new Stop-and-Go function, the ACC from MAN in the new generation also offers a convenient approach conduct to vehicles driving ahead. The system also avoids unnecessary braking and acceleration and thus reduces brake wear and fuel consumption when driving with ACC.
ACC and ACC Stop-and-Go ideally supplement the safety system Emergency Brake Assist (EBA 2) and Lane Guard System (LGS) and proactively help to avoid accidents. The Emergency Brake Assist EBA2 already exceeds the more strict legal guidelines for emergency brake systems applicable from November 2018. Due to the highly-mature sensor data fusion of radar and camera, EBA2 can also reliably interpret demanding traffic scenarios, vehicles travelling ahead and identify stationary obstacles with high security in order to trigger an emergency braking if required. Due to the positive experience with this dimensioning philosophy, since spring 2017, MAN has been installing the EBA 2 that can no longer be deactivated using a button in the instrument panel as standard in order to increase the gain in safety by the system even more. In doing so, the driver still has the complete control of the system at all times. Moreover, as of the IAA, EBA 2 is also available for new vehicles of Euro standard 3, 4 and 5.
MAN is introducing the Video Turning System (VAS) for the IAA. This reduces the risk of accidents when turning. It comprises a 150° wide-angle camera that is fixed on the right side of the drivers cab and a monitor that makes the right area of the vehicle side visible. The camera-monitor system with ultrasonic sensors equipped in the front of the vehicle and the in the right side can ensure for more safety. These detect objects and other road users at a distance up to two metres away from the cab.
Safe lightweight: MAN TGS Tank-Silo as innovation leader
At the IAA 2018, with the TGS-TS innovation leader, for the first time MAN will be showing application examples for the new D15 engine in the truck. The D15 is characterised by an outstanding ratio between weight and size as well as consumption. New computer aided construction methods and the use of different materials matched optimally to the use also make it even more environmentally friendly, low-noise and more efficient.
With regard to safety, the MAN TGS-TS innovation leader with the active power-assisted steering MAN Comfort Steering and the lane guard system Lane Return Assist provides an overview of future driver assist systems that actively assist the driver and make driving more safe. The new Video Turning System (VAS) is installed in the MAN TGS-TS innovation leader.

- At the IAA 2018, MAN will present its TGM-based eTruck concept for urban distributor logistics in the form of a 26-tonne, 6x2 solo chassis
- Nine members of the Austrian company consortium CNL will test the MAN eTGM in real operation
MAN Truck & Bus has been working on new solutions for goods delivery and waste disposal in urban environments since 2009. Cities are increasingly facing the challenge of balancing the need to provide a healthy climate and high quality of life for their residents with the demands of urban goods traffic and delivery logistics. This includes developing concepts to shift high-volume traffic away from city centre areas and out of peak times, as well as new approaches to using available space and new mobility concepts.
eTruck test vehicles based on TGM
During the IAA 2018 from 20th to 27th September 2018 in Hanover, MAN will present a fully electric eTruck solo distributor chassis with a swap body frame and a 6x2 axle configuration. The 26-tonne truck, based on the MAN TGM, incorporates batteries that can be installed under the cab and on the side of the frame, providing a range of up to 200 km. The air suspension on the front and rear axles ensures adaptability to any urban loading scenario. The electric motor, mounted in the centre of the frame, supplies 264 kW of power, transmitting 3100 Nm of torque to the drive wheels without the use of a manually operated gearbox. Designed to handle classic city logistics tasks, the vehicle is suitable for a wide variety of different body applications, from dry freight carrying or refrigerated box vans to refuse collector units. The additional drive systems needed for such applications are also electric. At the IAA, MAN will be offering daily test drives in the eTGM on the outdoor grounds of the trade fair.
CNL practical trials in Austria
The new fully electric MAN TGM 6x2 chassis forms the technical basis for nine vehicles that were released to nine member companies of the Austrian Council for Sustainable Logistics (CNL) for practical trials in mid-September 2018. The vehicles are primarily 6x2 chassis units featuring refrigerated box van units, swap bodies and beverage units. However, they also include a tractor-trailer unit based on the MAN TGM. MAN will incorporate the findings of these practical trials in the development of its future product portfolio of series-produced electric trucks.
The eTruck development and testing programme forms part of the MAN Truck & Bus eMobility Roadmap for urban transport solutions, which are scheduled to be included in the product portfolio starting in 2022. The concept involves trucks and buses using a shared eMobility kit, which will be available in future for a wide variety of applications.
Comprehensive practical experience with electrically powered trucks
MAN Truck & Bus introduced the MAN Metropolis concept vehicle back in 2012. The electrically powered, 26-tonne refuse collector vehicle ran CO2-free in local waste disposal operations and could even be used in the city centre at night, thanks to its low noise levels. An integrated range extender expanded its radius by up to 150 km per day. With the range extender, fuel consumption was reduced by up to 80 percent compared with a regular diesel-powered vehicle. The extensive practical deployment of the MAN Metropolis provided a valuable source of experience for ongoing projects.
At the IAA 2016, MAN Truck & Bus presented a further development of the Metropolis concept: an entirely battery-electric powered tractor-trailer unit for overnight urban delivery services. It was technically based on a MAN TGS 4X2 BLS tractor-trailer unit with an 18-tonne gross vehicle weight rating. Optimised to operate with single or twin-axled City trailers, the concept vehicle fulfilled the demands that will be imposed on vehicles involved in the urban logistics of the future: plenty of load space combined with a light empty weight, zero emissions (CO2, NOX), very quiet and highly manoeuvrable.

As well as this, the “MAN Advanced” package is added free of charge for the first six months. For the same amount of time, there is also the “MAN Perform” package for long-haul transport or “MAN Compliant” for construction and distribution transport.
“MAN Essentials” forms the basis for using the digital services. It also transfers the vehicle's position every 15 minutes and, above all, provides the materials requirement planner and company owner with information for running vehicle analyses. With “MAN ServiceCare”, vehicle data for planning maintenance appointments and servicing work is transferred to the relevant MAN dealership. This helps both parties – the materials requirement planner and the workshop – to be optimally prepared so as to minimise MAN truck downtimes as far as possible. “MAN Advanced” offers even greater access to vehicle data and the corresponding analyses going back over the last 25 months. “MAN Compliant” helps with downloading and archiving driver card and tachograph data.
Reliable lightweight: The MAN TGS tank silo - an innovation driver at the IAA
Reliable lightweight: The MAN TGS tank silo - an innovation driver at the IAA
Tank and silo forwarders focus on payload, safety and profitability in vehicle procurement. MAN is addressing these topics in the innovation vehicle on display, a MAN TGS 18.400 4x2 BLS-TS.
- MAN is showcasing the TGS-TS model at the IAA 2018 - the first possible application example for the new D15 engine in trucks
- With the MAN TGS-TS innovation driver, MAN provides an outlook on fuel-efficient technologies and future driver assistance systems
Countless goods ranging from milk, juice, liquid chocolate, through to heating oil, petrol and cryogenic gas, etc. are transported in tankers. In addition to high manoeuvrability and stable driving characteristics, the payload and safety of the vehicle are some of the most critical customer expectations. For the MAN TGS-TS range of vehicles for tank and silo forwarders, which is already optimally tailored to these requirements, MAN will be showcasing further optimisation potential in these areas with this innovation driver at the IAA 2018. With the TGS-TS semitrailer tractor put on display, MAN is introducing a possible truck application for the completely redesigned D15 engine for the first time. In addition to MAN's proven safety systems, such as ACC Stop & Go, EBA emergency braking system and Lane Guard System, MAN is for the first time also providing an outlook of the active MAN Comfort Steering system and a Lane Guard System, including Lane Return Assist as well as the VAS video turning system with ultrasonic monitoring in the TGS-TS innovator.
MAN D15: more environmentally friendly, quieter, more efficient
The new D15 engine installed in the TGS-TS concept vehicle with 400 hp / 294 kW generates a maximum torque of 1800 Newton metres and thus lies within the ideal performance range for transporting liquids. With an engine capacity of only 9 litres (9037 cm3), it simultaneously offers an excellent ratio between weight and size as well as consumption. New computer-based design methods and the use of different materials that are optimally matched to the application make it even more environmentally friendly, quieter and more efficient.
With the D15 , MAN is relying on exhaust gas aftertreatment based on advanced SCR technology (Selective Catalytic Reduction) in combination with the MAN CRT self-regenerating filter system (Continuously Regenerating Trap). The emission of NOX emissions (nitrogen oxides), which are harmful to the environment and health, is nearly zero due to this type of exhaust gas aftertreatment.
The new common rail injection system atomises fuel particularly finely at injection pressures of up to 2,500 bar and works particularly efficiently and with high fuel economy in conjunction with the space-optimised cylinder head with flatter outlet channels for less charge exchange losses as well as resistant steel pistons and robust camber valves. The single-stage turbo charger ensures optimum performance and very good response. The D15 can thus achieve its maximum torque of 1800 Nm even at low engine speeds. This is reflected in a dynamic "pick-up" feeling when starting off.
MAN developers have also optimised the D15 engine’s thermal management system. An adjustable charge air throttle valve upstream of and an exhaust gas accumulation valve downstream of the engine work together in tandem to accelerate the warming-up process and keep the exhaust gas temperature sufficiently high for ensuring a particularly effective SCR exhaust gas temperature. The new D15 engine already meets the strict requirements of the upcoming Euro 6d standard. The speed-controlled coolant pump, which does not operate permanently, but instead according to demand and the oil cooler, which is also switched on according to demand, and the fan with a speed sensor system provide the thermal management system with additional support and also contribute to consumption efficiency.
MAN also relies on fuel-saving solutions for the D15 engine attachments. Depending on the customer's application requirements, the 1-cylinder air compressors allow the customer to choose between a version that switches off completely after filling the compressed air tanks and a version that does not switch off, but is lighter and equipped with an economy system for backward expansion. A 2-cylinder version is also available for applications with higher air requirements, which also contributes to fuel savings with low power consumption during idling phases. The MAN TGS-TS also is also equipped with another innovative fuel-saving feature: an alternator whose power for charging the vehicle battery is electronically controlled depending on the vehicle's driving condition. While only the consumers in the vehicle electrical system are supplied during starting, acceleration and normal driving operation, the alternator is switched to full power when coasting and braking - i.e. in phases where no fuel is injected. This makes charging the battery extremely fuel-efficient.
MAN Turbo EVBec: Powerful engine brake for even more safety
Part of the requirement profile for liquid transports also includes a high-performance engine brake. This is why MAN has combined the D15 in the TGS-TS innovation driver with the Turbo EVBec controlled engine brake. It is gradually regulated by an electronically controlled and pneumatically operated butterfly valve and supplies up to 350 kW of engine braking power. This valve is positioned upstream of the turbo charger and can thus build up increased back pressure during braking. The braking performance remains constant even on long downhill stretches, which is an important safety benefit, especially for liquid transports.
MAN driver assistance systems: EBA2, Lane Guard System, ACC Stop-and-Go
At the 2018 IAA, MAN will be showcasing other equipment featured in its innovation vehicle that also focuses on safety. The TGS-TS 18.400 offers everything that MAN already offers as standard in assistance and safety systems, which is particularly important for tank and silo transport. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which MAN has also been offering with a stop-and-go function since 2018, provides critical safety and above all added comfort. The stop-and-go function automatically regulates the distance to the driver in front even at low speeds, brakes the vehicle to a standstill if necessary and also starts up again automatically at short stops. This allows the driver to cruise around relaxed and stress-free even in stop-and-go traffic. In addition to the new stop-and-go function, the new generation ACC from MAN also offers even more comfort when approaching vehicles in front. The system also avoids unnecessary braking and acceleration, reducing brake wear and fuel consumption while driving. ACC and ACC Stop-and-Go ideally complement the Emergency Brake Assist (EBA 2) and Lane Guard System (LGS) safety systems and help to proactively prevent accidents. The EBA2 emergency brake assistant already significantly exceeds the stricter legal requirements for emergency brake systems slated to take effect in November of this year. Thanks to the highly sophisticated sensor data fusion of radar and camera, EBA2 can also interpret demanding traffic scenarios with greater reliability, identify vehicles ahead and stationary obstacles with more certainty in order to only trigger emergency braking when required. Based on the positive experience with this design philosophy, MAN has not been installing the EBA 2 in the instrument panel as standard since spring 2017, so that the system can be switched off even more safely. The driver still has total control over the system at all times.
MAN Comfort Steering: Outlook for the future
MAN will also be exhibiting the TGS-TS innovation vehicle at the IAA featuring two additional active driver assistance systems that will be available in the near future. This includes an active power-assisted steering system, MAN Comfort Steering. Depending on the situation, it increases the steering torque applied by the driver with slight additional torque, thus reducing the steering forces and making steering more precise and comfortable overall. This also includes the second system that complements the function of the LGS Lane Guard System, which is already installed as standard. While it outputs an acoustic warning in case the vehicle drifts out of the lane, the LRA (Lane Return Assist), which will be available in the near future, actively intervenes and guides the vehicle back into the area within the lane markings. The driver can still override the system at any time. LGS and LRA can make a significant contribution to increasing safety, especially in the field of tank/silo transports.
MAN VAS: Video turning system for best view to the right
Despite numerous proactive supporting safety systems, the driver always has responsibility for the driving task. Above all, good visibility for the driver and his unrestricted perception of other road users are essential for this. With the combined camera system with turning warning system already available for the IAA 2018, MAN offers a significant increase in safety here, especially in dense city traffic. The area on the right side of the vehicle is not always fully visible to the driver, especially when turning, manoeuvring or changing lanes. There is a risk that other road users, such as cyclists or pedestrians, next to the truck will be overlooked. The video turning system (VAS) minimises the risk of accidents. It consists of a 150° wide-angle camera that is mounted on the right side of the cab and a monitor that makes the right side of the vehicle visible. The camera monitor system can be equipped with ultrasonic sensors on the front and right side of the vehicle for even greater safety. They register objects and other road users up to two metres away from the cab. When other road users approach, the driver receives a visual warning via LED warning lamps and an acoustic warning via a signal tone. This enables the driver to identify the potential hazardous situation in good time and respond accordingly.
As a further addition to the VAS, the 360° bird view system is available in addition to the camera monitor system and ultrasonic sensors. The system consisting of four HD cameras with fisheye optics provides high-resolution images of the vehicle from a bird's eye view. This makes the entire vehicle environment seamlessly visible, including all blind spots.
MAN is showcasing VAS for the first time on the TGS TS innovation vehicle at the IAA. It is available ex works for all TG truck series vehicles or retrofitted via MAN Truck Modification.
MAN ACC with stop-and-go function and EBA 2 permanently connected as standard
MAN ACC with stop-and-go function and EBA 2 permanently connected as standard
MAN offers a smart ACC stop-and-go function in TGX and TGS vehicles, easing the burden of drivers in congested traffic. The truck brakes to a stop autonomously and starts autonomously after short stops. The standard ACC function also includes a braking and acceleration strategy, providing a combination of comfort, safety, and fuel efficiency with convenient distance control. These functions are an ideal addition to the safety mechanisms of the emergency brake assist (EBA 2) and lane suard system (LGS) and can help to predictively prevent accidents.
- Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control (ACC) enables drivers to “cruise along” in heavy traffic, easing their burden
- ACC function provides fundamental improvements in automatic cruise control
- MAN only manufacturer to install EBA2 (emergency brake assist) as permanently connected standard feature
Whether it's commuter traffic is congested, traffic jams, or long queues of vehicles creeping up the motorway, these conditions mean having to constantly stop and start within a congested area filled with other road users. Stop-and-go driving challenges drivers and greatly increases the risk of rear-end collisions due to lapses in concentration. The stop-and-go function integrated into ACC adds a significant amount of extra safety in these situations. It is currently available for MAN TGX and MAN TGS with a Euro 6 D26 motor and with a MAN TipMatic 12+2 gearbox. The range will be expanded to include other powertrain versions by mid-2019.
Designed specifically for situations such as raffic jams and slow-moving traffic, the stop-and-go function makes it possible to use ACC across the entire speed range – including slowing to a standstill if the vehicle in front stops. Adaptive cruise control can also be used with stationary vehicles in front, but the vehicle with ACC must be moving at less than 50 km/h. If it takes less than two seconds to stop, the truck autonomously starts back up and moves forward. If the stop lasts longer than two seconds, the system automatically shuts off the service brake pressure and the driver can briefly press the accelerator or a button on the multi-function steering wheel to start. This prevents typical stop-and-go accidents involving vehicle body damage and allows the truck driver to deal with the traffic situation free of stress and fatigue. Sensors on the driver’s seat ensure that the function can only be activated when there is actually a driver at the wheel.
Convenience, efficiency, and safety with ACC
Along with its stop-and-go function, MAN’s ACC also makes it convenient to approach vehicles in front. In addition, the system avoids unnecessary braking and accelerating, reducing fuel consumption as well as wear and tear on the brakes during ACC driving. The function can be activated at speeds from 15 km/h and has a high maximum braking deceleration, allowing it to automatically neutralise critical situations with great reliability. A slanted radar system on the front apron virtually prevents snow build-up and the resulting functional limitations in wintry conditions. These features make distance control with the latest generation of ACC highly convenient, efficient, and safe.
ACC uses two sensor systems for the detection of stationary vehicles or vehicles in front. The first task here involves the data delivered by the radar sensor in the airdam. It continuously collects the distance and position of the vehicle in front, using the data to determine its relative speed and analyse it in relation to both the truck in which the system is installed and its own speed. This way, it can brake or accelerate accordingly. The second task is to evaluate the data recorded by the video camera on the windscreen. This features an object and lane detection system independent of the radar and delivers the necessary information to specifically classify the objects on or next to the roadway.
EBA 2 permanently activated
MAN also uses this highly developed sensor data fusion for the emergency brake assist (EBA 2) system. It enables EBA 2 to reliably interpret challenging traffic scenarios, identifying vehicles in front and stationary obstacles with a high degree of certainty so that emergency braking only needs to be initiated when strictly necessary. Dependable and robust object differentiation allows the system to respond uniquely to situations of this kind, reducing vehicle speed faster and bringing it to a stop a number of valuable yards earlier. EBA 2 already goes significantly beyond the stricter legal standards that will apply to emergency braking systems from the end of 2018. MAN offers EBA 2 for the full tonnage range from 7.5 tonnes onwards and has offered it for vehicles at Euro 3, 4 and 5 emission standard levels since early 2018.
EBA 2 is designed according to the maxim “the driver should always be in control”. This MAN-specific warning philosophy guarantees a high degree of acceptance among drivers. The interplay between two technologies for object detection (radar and camera) substantially reduces the risk of unwarranted warnings, achieving MAN’s aim of irritating drivers as infrequently as possible with warning signals.
Based on positive experiences with this design philosophy and a desire to further boost the safety gains from the system, MAN has now been installing the EBA 2 as standard for a year and a half without the former option of switching it off with a button on the instrument panel. This continues to guarantee complete control over the system at all times on the driver’s part.
In the pursuit of increased safety, the two features are supported by others. Along with the brake lights, the emergency stopping signal (ESS) activates the hazard warning flashers with a higher flashing frequency in the event of emergency deceleration. Meanwhile, the lane guard system (LGS) precisely monitors the vehicle position in relation to the lane and autonomously detects changes in lane conditions. In combination with these, EBA 2 and the new ACC stop-and-go function offer all road users added safety and provide significant relief to truck drivers.
Look right: MAN video turning assistant system boosts safety
Look right: MAN video turning assistant system boosts safety
A camera and ultrasonic sensors in MAN trucks’ video turning assistant systems are helping to expand drivers’ field of view into blind spots. The monitor is located in the field of vision when the driver looks to the right into the mirror.
- Camera on the right-hand side of the cab
- Monitor on the right-hand A-pillar
- Ultrasonic sensors on the vehicle’s front end and right side of the cab
- Installation or retrofitting by the MAN Truck Modification Center for the TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX series
It is difficult to see what is going on to the right-hand side of a vehicle, so if something critical is about to happen when turning, changing lanes or manoeuvring, the driver needs to alerted to this as early as possible. The MAN VAS, a video turning assistant system, helps the driver to see what is happening alongside their vehicle, supporting the view afforded by the rear-view and kerb mirrors. This way, they can identify whether objects or other road users (such as cyclists or smaller vehicles) are in a position directly next to their cab. Obstacles such as bollards, walls or parked vehicles become more obvious when manoeuvring. The system is activated automatically whenever the right-hand indicator is switched on. If required – for instance, while manoeuvring – the driver can also switch the system on manually using a switch.
On request, MAN can install a camera with a 150° wide angle lens on the right-hand side of the cab near to the edge of the roof. This service is provided by MAN Truck Modification. The monitor, which measures 7 inches, is usually installed inside the cab on the passenger side A-pillar. When the driver looks to the right into the mirror, the monitor is visible in the field of vision. Alternatively, the camera signal can be played back on the 7-inch display for the Infotainment system on the instrument panel.
For even greater safety, the camera monitor system can be equipped with ultrasonic sensors at the front of the vehicle and on its right-hand side. These register objects and other road users at a distance of up to two metres from the cab. If other road users are moving closer, the driver receives a visual warning by means of LED warning lamps, as well as an acoustic warning via a signal tone. This empowers the driver to detect the potentially hazardous situation in good time and to respond accordingly.
This equipment can be ordered as a factory-fitted feature or retrofitted.
MAN Truck Modification: Optimising vehicles for industry-specific use
MAN Truck Modification: Optimising vehicles for industry-specific use
MAN has more than 30 years of experience in modifying trucks to satisfy customer requirements that cannot be met in mass production. The demand for special conversions as one of the basic elements of an ideal and economical transport solution is constantly growing, as is demand for interior and exterior customisation by “MAN Individual” to increase the attractiveness of the driver’s workplace.
- MAN Individual adds emotional value to MAN trucks
- Vehicle modifications designed and implemented for cab, chassis, driveline and electronics
- Benefits for customers: single point of contact, work carried out according to documentation and warranty guidelines, along with quality assurance process
- Vehicle service available at any MAN branch.
Many customers and body manufacturers request adaptations to the chassis, driver’s cab or driveline so they can put their vehicle to industry-specific use. This task of adapting the chassis that rolls off the production line at MAN to the needs of customers is performed by MAN Truck Modification at its sites in Munich and Wittlich, Germany, as well as in Steyr, Austria.
The benefits for customers include having a single point of contact in their sales associate, who controls the implementation of the requirements together with MAN Truck Modification. The work is carried out according to the highest quality standards in line with DIN EN ISO 9001, and includes MAN vehicles’ warranties. Once completed, the modification work is included in the invoice for the complete vehicle. In addition, brand-specific expertise in vehicle engineering has a direct presence in MAN Modification’s technical and production teams.
Modifications to the cab
MAN Truck Modification has been working on cab design at the Wittlich plant for more than 25 years. In driver’s cabs, the focus is on extensions or conversions in the form of flat roofs, roof recesses or sloping roofs. Extensive stability tests have been undertaken before the roof conversions are approved. The installation of a crew cab on the MAN TGS chassis has been a new addition since the IAA 2018.
C-cabin extensions are often ordered by municipal services, disaster protection organisations and fire brigades to provide more interior space. The GRP moulded part used instead of the rear wall of the driver’s cab offers around 265 millimetres of extra space.
The construction of crew cabins made of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) for a crew of nine staff is of huge importance when it comes to emergency services vehicles for fire brigades, first responders and disaster protection services. The doors are raised to the edge of the roof for safe entry and exit. MAN put this crew cabin through comprehensive crash tests before it went into mass production. It has been awarded the ECE R29 test certificate for the protection of cab occupants.
Enhancements to the vehicles are another area of focus. Fitting stainless steel panels (including with lights) on the front, roof and sides of a vehicle helps to customise it. The interior is not just a place for driving lesson equipment or installing seating in place of a bed. The insertion of a storage unit on the rear wall of the cab in the XLX and XXL cabs also adds to the sense of comfort. On request, a microwave, coffee machine, kettle or fold-out 15.6”' LED flat screen can be integrated into the built-in storage units. MAN Truck Modification uses leather trim, along with special designs and their adhesive coverings, to create custom and customer-specific one-offs or small batches.
Modifications to the chassis
On the chassis, the main tasks involve making changes to the wheelbases, shortening and offsetting frame overhangs, mounting additional axles and steered rear axles, reinforcing or offsetting the frame, as well as adding and adjusting attachments on the frame. Especially on municipal works vehicles, low-lying equipment boxes or units mounted on the frame (such as brushes and suction shafts on sweepers) mean that the battery boxes, fuel tanks or compressed-air tanks that would otherwise be mounted there need to be relocated. MAN Truck Modification also offers the option of installing a swap body for container transport.
Modifications to the driveline
On the driveline, the standard gearbox can be replaced by a converter automatic gearbox or power take-offs can be adjusted. For special applications, MAN Modification can add suitably designed reduction gears, power take-offs and retarders to the driveline.
Modifications to the electronics
Work on electronic systems may include installing additional lights, roadwork spotlights, warning devices, reversing video systems, radio technology, or power and air supply systems. But these are also closely coordinated with the other modification tasks, as their retrofitted or converted units need to be integrated into the vehicle electronics.
MAN Modification can offer a complete range of equipment for emergency services vehicles, such as the installation of special signalling devices, radios, a third seat in the driver’s cab and storage boxes on the frame.
MAN Individual
MAN provides the “MAN Individual” badge to identify jobs that turn the truck into a unique, customised vehicle. The external and internal enhancements boost the owners’ and drivers’ enthusiasm for their vehicle. MAN Truck Modification works together with the customer to plan the implementation of their individual requests. In terms of the exterior, this may involve special adhesive coverings, stainless steel steps, hub caps, or low, side and highbars with lighting (including on the roof). Interior modifications revolve around upgrading the driver’s workplace and rest space. The range of tasks that can be undertaken to enhance occupants’ sense of comfort and enjoyment include coloured leather trim, rotating co-driver’s seats, LED lighting in various colours, and made-to-order built-in cabinets in the XLX and XXL cabs. Coffee makers, kettles and a fold-out 15.6” LED flat screen can be integrated into the built-in storage units on request.

The crew cab available in the MAN TGL and TGM series can be counted as a success story. It can be used in many situations that call for a number of other people to travel along with the driver. The parties interested in the spacious, four-door crew cabs include municipal services, disaster protection organisations, fire brigades, first-aid services, mining companies, building contractors, gardeners and landscapers, as well as users of exclusive expedition vehicles and RVs. By autumn 2018, the range of crew cabs will be expanded to include the TGS series, with MAN Truck Modification taking care of implementation. The cab is currently available for two- and three-axle chassis with medium-high and high design height, with 4x2 BL, 4x4 BB, 4x4 BL, 6x4 BB, 6x4-4 BL and 6x6 BL drive configurations. MAN also offers the crew cab as part of the TGS 4x4H BL and 6x6H BL in combination with the innovative HydroDrive drive system.
The dimensions of the crew cab are identical for all three series (TGL, TGM and TGS). Its interior’s width is 2,056 mm, the length is 2,650 mm, the height at the front above the centre tunnel is 1,385 mm and the height at the rear in front of the seat bench is 1,620 mm. The maximum standing height in front of the driver’s seat measures 1,645 mm. There are four seats, including seat belts, attached to the seat bench. Along with a double seat at the front, up to seven people can be accommodated in the cab. The box under the rear seat bench can boast a capacity of 265 litres. Wide doors, which open wide at 85 degrees, make entering and exiting an easy task. The crew cab can be tilted hydraulically for maintenance work.
Off-road exhibition vehicle
The MAN TGS 26.500 6x6 BB with 20″ single tyres, which will be on display at the IAA 2018 in Hanover, has been assembled with a special box truck body as an exhibition model in the style of an expedition vehicle. Its custom interior fittings were installed at the MAN Bus Modification Center in Plauen. The front area is taken up by a group of seats, from which occupants can view a large screen for meetings and presentations. A small kitchenette can be used to supply guests with hot and cold drinks. The centre of the box truck body provides space for product presentations. A staircase leads from the body up to the accessible roof.
In a similar vein, the MAN Bus Modification Center could also conceivably convert externally sourced box bodies into off-road expedition vehicles or made-to-order motorhomes. With the addition of the MAN TGS crew cab supplied by MAN Truck Modification, family, friends and acquaintances can join the driver during trips in comfort and safety.
MAN Buses at the IAA 2018
Today's buses for the transport challenges of tomorrow. MAN Truck & Bus is exhibiting a wide range of bus products at this year’s IAA. The new MAN Lion’s City eBus and CNG as well as a MAN TGE-based minibus are being presented to the public for the first time.
MAN and NEOPLAN buses at the IAA 2018
MAN and NEOPLAN buses at the IAA 2018
- The new generation of city buses is rounded off with the eBus and the new E18 gas engine
- MAN Lion’s Coach with electrohydraulically steered trailing axle and new MAN TipMatic Coach transmission
- For the first time a MAN TGE-based minibus
- NEOPLAN Skyliner optionally available with stairs to the right
- Information on MAN Transport Solutions’ comprehensive consulting services and on MAN services
Following the première of the new generation of city buses in Spring 2018, the IAA is providing a stage for commercial vehicles to present the new MAN Lion’s City to a wider audience for the first time. The hybrid module, MAN Efficient Hybrid, is thus celebrating its first appearance at the trade show. On the one hand, it saves fuel thanks to its use of recovered braking energy. On the other, the stop-start function supports super-silent and emission-free stop phases. In addition to the exciting, eye-catching new smart edge design, the two-axle vehicle being exhibited at the IAA stands out thanks to an innovation on the doors: Illuminated door closing edges indicate the opening and closing action of the doors in different colours.
Alongside the diesel version, the city bus family will also be upgraded with alternative drive systems in time for IAA 2018. In addition, as a world première on its stand MAN Truck & Bus is for the first time exhibiting a city bus incorporating the newly developed gas engine as well as a prototype of the fully electric Lion City E. The latter visually contrasts with its conventional brother on the trade show stand thanks to its slightly modified design underlining the unique nature of the electric drive system. In particular, the withdrawal of the engine housing and so the additional seats at the rear clearly set the eBus apart as such. The fully electric drivetrain delivers 160 up to a maximum of 270 kW. The inside of the solo bus, designed with 29 seats, can be accessed through three electrically operated doors.
As the market leader in the market sector for gas-driven city buses, during the same year as its presentation of the new MAN Lion’s City, MAN is also presenting the completely newly developed gas engine, the MAN E18, also as an option with MAN Efficient Hybrid. So MAN demonstrates the high priority it attaches to alternative drive systems within its product portfolio. The articulated bus on show demonstrates the passenger flow-optimising effect of innovative, situation-based illuminated partitions and translucent concertina walls. Optimised for standing room capacity, the four-door vehicle boasts 39 seats. The newly developed MAN E1856 LOH delivers 320 HP (235 kW) and uses a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
The MAN product portfolio is rounded off at its show stand with a MAN Lion’s Coach L, in a long-haul version complete with lift and two wheelchair places. Unlike the Lion’s Coach presented last year for the first time, the position of the C-pillar has now been optimised for a better view including in the first row of seats. Otherwise the bus now has an electrohydraulically steered trailing axle increasing manoeuvrability and the new 12-gear transmission, the MAN TipMatic Coach. The enhanced-performance MAN D2676 LOH delivers 470 HP (346 kW) and 2,400 Nm maximum torque. The new engine version is available from July 2019.
NEOPLAN: Comfortable and innovative for every application
The NEOPLAN Skyliner on show is optimised to be able to meet the requirements of long-haul transportation. Thanks to its low-floor design on the lower deck, it also offers comfortable access for people with limited mobility. Thanks to the incorporation of fold-up seats on a sliding system, up to two wheelchair places are available on it. To accommodate optimised passenger flow and a higher seating capacity, as an option MAN has moved the front stairs to the right-hand side of the vehicle at the exhibit. Thus 78 passengers can find a comfortable seat on the double decker. The drive system comprises a redesigned D26 engine now delivering 510 HP (375 kW) and a maximum torque of 2,600 Nm and features the new generation of MAN TipMatic Coach automated gear shift transmission.
As an effective measure to prevent blind spot-related accidents, the NEOPLAN Skyliner and Cityliner on show have a new replacement mirror system. Cameras on both sides of the vehicle deliver real-time images on two displays built into the driver's field of view thereby eliminating any blind spot. At a glance the driver can thus assess the complete situation, which would otherwise require rear, wide-angle and ramp mirrors. The camera technology used supports high-resolution display of the surrounding area irrespective of daylight so that the driver has improved view at night and in changing light conditions. In addition, in contrast to the mirror limiting factors due, for example, to misting up, dirt accumulation or sun glare are also minimised. This also enhances safety at the same time as reducing the probability of having a collision and thus the repair costs.
The NEOPLAN Cityliner has also incorporated a bird view system, which supports observation of the surroundings with six cameras. The image is output to a separate monitor on the driver’s console. The Cityliner L not only promises an ultra-safe travel experience but also one that is ultra-exclusive thanks to its modified interior. With the focus on the feel and experience, it meets the most demanding comfort and catering requirements for up to 35 passengers. In addition to the exclusive VIP lounge, for this purpose it has a kitchen with a convection oven, induction charging for mobile telephones and ambient lighting. The MAN Bus Modification Center thus once again impressively demonstrates its supreme ability in fitting out vehicles.
The Tourliner C on show marks the entry point into the NEOPLAN World. And what an entry! As the third vehicle in the movingART art project, the two-axle vehicle blazons a prominent Berlin adhesive tape livery. In the interior complementary warm, earthy colours and materials are found, which accentuate the premium, modern design. Incorporating 4-star seating, 48 passengers can be seated on the coach, which has a state-of-the-art drivetrain with recently performance-enhanced 470 HP (346 kW) and 2,400 Nm maximum torque as well as the new MAN TipMatic Coach.
MAN TGE Minibus
With the introduction of the MAN TGE, MAN Truck & Bus positioned itself at the last IAA for commercial vehicles as a full-range provider in freight transport. This heralds the culmination in its bus product range including TGE-based minibuses. An intercity variant with 15 passenger seats is being exhibited at the show stand in the form of the MAN TGE Intercity. Access is gained via an electric sliding door with an electric retractable step board, and a standard roof-mounted air-conditioning system constantly provides pleasant temperatures. In addition, USB charging sockets on the side walls and additional speakers further enhance passenger convenience. The minibus, which might for example be used for shuttle, excursion and hotel feeder traffic, measures 7,391 mm and has numerous assistance systems such as the Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), a lateral wind assistant and active lane guard system. Under the bonnet a 2-litre engine delivers 177 HP (130 kW), with manual transmission.
Highly recommended: MAN Services and MAN Transport Solutions
In addition to its products, the MAN show stand will also be available to discuss the extensive services offered by the commercial vehicle manufacturer such as maintenance management, repair service, OEM parts and accessories as well as financial services. For example, the MAN in-house training provider, MAN ProfiDrive, promises improved safety and efficiency through its hands-on driver training courses. Particularly in the area of passenger transport, there is a focus on the technical safety aspects and how they can be improved. In order to optimise road transport economy the goal is to achieve fuel savings of up to 10% through a smart combination of driver ability, forward-looking time management and economical route planning.
MAN is dedicating an in-house specialism to the challenges of switching to alternative drive systems. Here the experts in the consulting team of MAN Transport Solutions will answer all questions about the pathway from “low emissions” to “no emissions”. The focus of the consulting services is on electrification of bus, truck and van fleets. Drawing upon a wealth of experience, not only can the qualified consultants provide advice regarding the vehicle itself, they are also able to cover issues relating to infrastructure and energy demand, as well as maintenance concepts and fleet design.
MAN Lion’s City E: Easing the Way to Zero Emissions
MAN Lion’s City E: Easing the Way to Zero Emissions
MAN Truck & Bus is showcasing its fully electric Lion’s City at this year’s International Motor Show (IAA) for Commercial Vehicles in Hanover, Germany.
- MAN opts for central motor and depot charging for its electric bus
- Reliable range of 200 km (and up to 270 km under favourable conditions) over entire battery life
- Mass production to start in the second half of 2020
- MAN's comprehensive consulting services make it as easy as possible for transport companies to get started with electric vehicles
In light of demands for progressively lower emissions in urban centres, one thing is certain: the future of local public transport will overwhelmingly be fully electric. MAN Truck & Bus is operating on the assumption that around 66% of scheduled-service buses will be electric by 2030. In this spirit, MAN is showcasing the fully electric version of the new MAN Lion’s City urban transit bus at the 2018 IAA for Commercial Vehicles. This tops off MAN’s new generation of city buses, following on from diesel and gas engines with a zero-emissions variant.
A slightly modified design highlights the unique nature of the electric drive. Its most striking feature is the lack of a rear engine compartment, with the batteries installed on the roof, making room for an ideal seating area at the back. Firstly, this positioning moves the batteries away from the vehicle’s rear, which is vulnerable in the event of a crash. Secondly, it allows for more design flexibility, more pleasant lighting and up to four additional seats in the interior.
MAN has opted for one central motor to power its electric bus (on the rear axle), then two to power its articulated bus (on the second and third axles). These are easier to access and more simply designed than motors in close proximity to the wheels, which provides advantages in terms of maintenance and the total cost of ownership (TCO). In particular, the articulated bus benefits in terms of its handling. The two driven axles increase its driving stability and, in turn, its safety, as well as providing maximum energy recovery when braking.
The fully electric driveline produces 160 to 270 kW in the Solobus. The power used for this comes from the modular batteries with 480 kWh capacity (Solo) or 640 kWh (articulated). In selecting these, MAN decided to take advantage of precision-engineered battery cell technology from the company’s existing range. These batteries’ sophisticated temperature management guarantees especially strong availability, regardless of the time of year. This way, the Lion’s City E can reliably ensure their range of 200 km (or up to 270 km under favourable conditions) over their batteries’ full life cycles.
The batteries are plugged into a CCS and charged at the depot, which can fully charge Solobuses in under three hours and articulated buses in under four with an average charging power of 100 kW. This length of time falls accordingly when the maximum charging power of 150 kW is supplied. MAN surveyed close to 200 customers throughout Europe and received feedback from several cities. It concluded that, for the sake of routine operations later in the day, flexible and uninterrupted service (without opportunity charging) is more important than an unlimited range. Especially since battery technology is developing at a rapid pace. The Lion’s City E will remain at the cutting edge in this regard, as it will be possible to upgrade the vehicle concept to the next battery generation. Charging outside of peak hours will also enable operators to tap into smart charge management and benefit from lower electricity rates, further adding to the cost effectiveness of running electric bus services.
Since the electric model is a fully-fledged member of the new MAN Lion’s City family, it will be easy to adopt into professional processes. And, as ever, transport companies will be able to benefit from the MAN service network.
MAN eMobility Roadmap
As part of MAN’s plan for electric vehicles (known as the eMobility Roadmap), a demo fleet will be tested to establish its suitability for everyday use in a series of field trials in mid-2020, partnering with various European operators. To this end, MAN has entered into several innovation partnerships with mass transit operators from Hamburg (Hamburger Hochbahn and Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein), Munich (Stadtwerke München and Münchner Verkehrs Gesellschaft) and Wolfsburg (Stadtwerke Wolfsburg and Wolfsburger Verkehrs-GmbH). Another partnership MAN has agreed is with two companies from Luxembourg: Voyages Emile Weber and Losch Luxembourg, a Volkswagen Group importer and the largest dealership group in the country. The MAN Lion’s City E vehicles will then go into mass production in 2020.
MAN Truck & Bus recognises that transport companies and fleet operators face a number of challenges beyond straightforward vehicle considerations when transitioning from “low emissions” to “no emissions”. As a result, it has established a specialised consultation team called MAN Transport Solutions for custom transport solutions that deliver maximum cost effectiveness. Drawing on a wealth of experience, the highly-skilled consultants are not limited to providing advice regarding the vehicle itself. They can also cover issues relating to infrastructure and energy demand, as well as maintenance concepts and fleet design, providing the best possible support to the operators.
New E18 Gas Engine: Smaller Size, Higher Performance
New E18 Gas Engine: Smaller Size, Higher Performance
Following on from its diesel version, MAN Truck & Bus is also due to present a new gas-powered city bus. The newly developed E18 engine will be used in the new Lion’s City G.
- New generation of city buses to be accompanied by new E18 gas engine
- Higher torque with smaller displacement
- Highly efficient thanks to combination of gas engine and MAN EfficientHybrid
Efficient drive systems with alternative fuels are hugely important in the pursuit of lower emissions in urban centres. Among fossil fuels, the combustion of natural gas produces the least CO2. If owners opt for processed biogas, it is even theoretically possible for their vehicle use to be carbon-neutral without any additional requirements. In light of this, MAN will be adding a gas variant to its new city bus family. The MAN Lion’s City G will be equipped with the E18 engine series, a brand-new development which produces higher torque despite its smaller displacement compared with the predecessor model. This way, cities can obtain a vehicle that provides maximum cost effectiveness and minimum environmental impact while fitting seamlessly into current professional processes – and this is especially true when combined with the MAN EfficientHybrid module.
Passengers and local residents alike stand to benefit from more than simply the ultra-quiet slowdowns at stops or traffic lights (at which MAN EfficientHybrid’s stop-start function allows the engine to switch off completely). They will also enjoy the lower levels of engine noise thanks to quieter combustion compared with diesel. Those boarding can choose between up to 29 seats or standing room for 70 passengers.
The E1856 (as it is specifically named) is a newly developed, 9.5 L, four-valve inline six engine maintained at lambda = 1. It has a bore of 118 mm and a stroke of 145 mm, which is specifically intended for use in buses around the world. For this purpose, it is available in the 276 hp (206 kW) and 316 hp (235 kW) performance classes. Its maximum torque is 1,200 Nm, or 1,400 Nm at between 900 and 1,500 rpm in the larger version. The E18 engine reaches the Euro 6d exhaust emission stage thanks a newly developed, cooled exhaust gas recirculation system, along with a three-way catalytic converter. The high compression ratio combined with the exhaust gas recirculation makes for highly economical fuel consumption values with low exhaust gas emissions. The engine’s lower weight compared with its predecessor, the E28, is directly to the benefit of the vehicle’s passenger capacity. In this respect, it has drawn on a large number of innovative features (such as the controlled coolant pump and two-stage air compressor) from another brand-new development: the 9-litre D15 diesel engine.
The fuel is stored in four or five pressure vessels on the vehicle roof at a rail pressure of 200 bar. The use of fewer but larger vessels for this saves on weight and simplifies maintenance. Customers can choose between a selection of different storage capacities between 1,260 L and 1,875 L. The CNG storage system is sheltered by a hood, which is built into the design, with large maintenance flaps at the front and rear. All known gas quality levels from the natural gas grid can be used to refuel (including, for instance, refined biogas).
Small Wonder: the MAN TGE Intercity
Small Wonder: the MAN TGE Intercity
MAN is topping off its range of buses with a minibus based on the MAN TGE. The new arrival will be available in city, intercity and coach versions.
- Minibus based on TGE 5.180 presented
- Numerous assistance systems available for maximum safety
- Assembled at MAN Bus Modification Center in Plauen, Germany, and at selected body manufacturers
- Tried and tested service packages and financing options
Whether the situation involves small groups, flexible shuttle services or off-peak periods on local public transport, a 12-metre bus is not always the right choice. That is why MAN Truck & Bus is expanding its range of minibuses with up to 19 seats based on the MAN TGE. MAN is exhibiting the MAN TGE Intercity at the International Motor Show (IAA) for Commercial Vehicles 2018 in Hanover, Germany. This model has 15 passenger seats, which could be used for shuttles, excursions or hotel transfers. Scheduled-service and coach versions are set to follow at the end of the year.
The MAN minibuses are based on the TGE 5.180 with 177 hp (130 kW) and a maximum torque of 410 Nm. With its overall length spanning 7,391 mm, this up to five metric tonne minibus’ wheelbase measures 4,490 mm, and its rear axle is mounted with twin tyres. It has six gears, which are manually shifted. However, an automatic gearbox for the TGE will be also showcased for the first time at the IAA 2018.
Drivers and tour guides make their way to their seats through two front doors, while passengers enter the vehicle through an electric sliding door with an automatic extending step. Bags can be stowed away in the luggage compartment via two outward-opening boot doors. There is also the option of adding a wheelchair ramp here. Since the seats are attached to airline rails with snap fasteners, various seating distances and configurations can be arranged with only a small amount of set-up work. All the passenger seats are equipped with three-point seat belts and adjustable backrests. As with the floor coverings, customers will be able to choose between materials from the well-established MAN bus range. In addition, custom styles will be available for individual operators, as is the case for all MAN and NEOPLAN coaches.
A roof-mounted air-conditioning system comes as standard to maintain a pleasant interior temperature, ensuring that these smaller coach models are in no way inferior to their larger counterparts when it comes to driving comfort. USB charging sockets on the side walls and additional speakers also help to provide a comfortable passenger experience. The TGE is equipped with a number of assistance systems for safety on the road, such as the advanced emergency braking system (EBA), crosswind assistant and active Lane Guard System (which are all installed as standard). Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), fatigue detection and road sign detection systems can also be added as optional extras. A rear-view camera and LED main headlights (which include LED daytime driving lights) promise high visibility. The other optional systems – for instance, trailer assist (along with park steering assist), front and rear park distance control, and side wall protection assist – work to avoid collision damage and resulting repair costs.
Built and Serviced by Pros
Like the TGE-based VIP shuttles, which seat up to nine people, these minibuses are also assembled at the MAN Bus Modification Center in Plauen. The BMC has modified over 100 TGEs in the first year since their launch. Their range of services includes custom additions, alterations and removals for customers working in passenger transport, skilled trades or the construction industry, as well as for leisure and office vehicles. MAN is also expanding its portfolio to include other variants in partnership with selected body manufacturers.
With regard to maintenance and service, minibus customers can also benefit from the professional MAN service. Among other things, this is known for its simple assistance without the need for workshop appointments, its fast emergency support (including on weekends and at night) and its extensive opening hours. Needless to say, we focus on service for the complete vehicle as well as flexible repair and maintenance contracts. Finally, the workshop’s services also include extended warranties and a 24-hour breakdown service.
In addition, MAN offers tailored financial services to support bus companies during the purchase and service life of their vehicles.

- Improvements in dynamic gearshifts, degree of efficiency and moving-off behaviour
Difficult terrain and frequent stop-and-go traffic pose a challenge to bus and coach gearboxes. MAN Truck & Bus has expanded its selection of gearboxes for its MAN and NEOPLAN brands in order to offer optimum driving comfort, even in these particularly demanding applications. The MAN Lion’s Coach, NEOPLAN Cityliner and Tourliner have been available with the EcoLife Coach torque converter gearbox since last May, along with maximum torque levels of 2,100 Nm (at 420 hp) and 2,300 Nm (at 460 hp). This allows an automatic torque converter to be combined with the optimised Euro 6 driveline with the D26 engine.
Neither hairpin bends on mountain roads nor urban traffic at low speeds will compromise drivers’ or passengers’ comfort with the use of the fully automatic, six-speed gearbox, in addition to a converter lockup clutch and a downstream planetary gearset. The hydrodynamic torque converter boosts the engine torque, making driving off and accelerating a smooth and relaxed process free of clutch wear. The power flow is not interrupted during gear changes, which increases comfort and mileage while also saving fuel in areas where traction interruptions would be especially consequential. The large steering axis inclination, combined with the converter’s torque increase factor in first gear, guarantees high tractive force throughout the drive. The TopoDyn Life control software, specially developed for the EcoLife gearbox, dynamically adapts the shifting points to the route profile – this is calculated on an ongoing basis by factoring in the topography, current load and acceleration values, and variable driving resistance. Two overdrives facilitate lower engine speeds and reduced noise levels at higher speeds.
The primary retarder in the EcoLife Coach automatic gearboxes also adds to the vehicle’s comfort and safety, providing high brake output and relieving the service brake, especially at low and average speeds. The retarder can even operate reliably on longer stretches with a steep downward gradient, thanks to two independent cooling systems.
MAN TipMatic Coach – Further Improving a Proven Product
There are also some innovative developments at MAN in terms of automatic gearboxes. From the end of this year onwards, the coaches will be supplied with the new TipMatic Coach as standard, starting at 460 hp. The changes include better moving-off behaviour, thanks in part to the new tilt detector and an improved gearbox control unit with MAN’s specially formulated gear shift strategy. This strategy always selects the optimum gear and engine speed for moving off based on the actual weight of the coach and the current topography. This prevents damage to the clutch and driveline, as well as providing extra comfort and dynamism when driving off. The refined SmartShifting system ensures a quick shifting process in all gears. The software uses data from the accelerator pedal position, vehicle mass and driving resistance calculations to establish the ideal balance between shifting speed, comfort and service life for each situation. Kickdowns make it possible to shift down more quickly, while drivers can also switch gears manually at any time. In addition, predictive shifting facilitates a high average speed without increasing fuel consumption. Targeted increases in the engine speed mean that a large power reserve can be used early on (for example, when driving towards an incline while using MAN EfficientCruise). Conversely, in an anticipatory process, the engine speed is reduced with an upshift at the end of the incline.
An upshift assistance system, as it is known, also ensures improved dynamic gearshifts by employing the Exhaust Valve Brake (electronically controlled – EVBec). When a driver skips up to three gears at once, this briefly closes the exhaust throttle valve (exhaust flap) to rapidly decrease the number of revs per minute while the clutch is open. The engine brake is combined with a secondary retarder as standard for high continuous brake performance. This produces a maximum of 500 kW and 4,000 Nm of braking torque. As a result of the increased gear ratio, tangibly useful retarder braking is also possible in the lower speed range. In addition, there are sufficient reserves available to achieve even further speed reductions during continuous braking, while at the same time minimising service brake wear and tear.
The degree of efficiency will improve to up to 99.7% in the new generation in the direct 11th gear, putting it at the highest level. The new MAN TipMatic Coach is also prepared for high engine performance with a maximum input torque of 2,800 Nm.
Along with the many innovative developments, the new generation of gearboxes will also be given the tried and tested features, such as the predictive cruise control (MAN EfficientCruise) along with the EfficientRoll coasting function, plus the optimised manoeuvring feature and Idle Speed Driving. This latter feature allows comfortable driving at idling speed without having to press the accelerator in 1st to 6th gear, meaning that the coach can coast along in slow-moving traffic, relieving the driver of effort and the clutch of potential wear and tear.
Several functions are to be introduced for the first time for coaches below Euro 6 level with the new TipMatic gearbox, including the EfficientRoll freewheeling function, SpeedShifting, and the long axle ratio of i=2.73, along with the D26 engine – a proven performer.
MAN Lion’s City: Setting standards in every respect
MAN Lion’s City: Setting standards in every respect
With the new generation of the MAN Lion’s City, a completely new type of urban bus is being introduced into the inner city. A plethora of technical innovations have been combined with the new MAN bus design.
- This generation of MAN city buses has been developed completely from scratch and combines a clear focus on efficiency, comfort and ergonomics with the new MAN bus design
- The new MAN EfficientHybrid enables use of a stop-start function
- Independent wheel suspension and new shock absorber technology in series production
- Full-LED main headlights and tail lights are available for the first time
- The interior gets an upgrade with a new seat bracket, new handrails and new colour and trim
- More ergonomics and safety for the driver
As part of the BusDays in-house exhibition in March of this year, the new MAN Lion's City celebrated its world première. With a clear focus on profitability, driving comfort, technology and design, the developers have taken the task upon themselves of setting new standards for all components. Examples include the all-new driveline with the MAN EfficientHybrid, the independent wheel suspension on the front axle, the LED light functions and the new modular interior. This is because the new MAN Lion's City marks the beginning of a new era. It therefore has been designed to meet all current and foreseeable future legal standards.
From the outside, the new city bus is an unmistakable example of the new MAN bus design. It has a range of eye-catching features, including its distinctive headlights, which incorporate an LED band that acts as daytime driving lights, and the typical black MAN front panel with chrome trim, as well as its large side windows. Not only do these lend the vehicle an impression of dynamism, but as aspects of segmented panelling, they also contribute to the improvement of Life Cycle Costs (LCC). In a nod to modern smartphone design, even the rear has become a distinctive feature, as we can see on the new MAN Lion’s City and the new MAN Lion’s Coach. What’s more, it also enables perfect accessibility to the various components.
Now even more economical thanks to MAN EfficientHybrid with stop-start system and reduced weight
However, the new materials and manufacturing processes used not only make the new city bus look good, but also lighter, more robust and also increases its ease of use, e.g. on service and engine compartment flaps. For example, the 12-metre variant of the new MAN Lion's City has slimmed down by around 1,130 kg compared to its predecessor with its D20 engine. This includes, among other things, a redesigned engine compartment flap, which does not require a steel frame, as well as a thinner rear window and a weight-optimised side wall lining made of natural-fibre-reinforced polypropylene.
The new, lighter D1556 LOH engine, which already complies with the Euro 6d emission standard valid from 1 September 2019, can optionally be supplemented with the MAN EfficientHybrid system, which significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions. In doing so, the standard stop-start function of the MAN EfficientHybrid ensures whisper-quiet stop phases at stops and traffic lights. At the heart of the system is the crankshaft starter generator, an electric machine that converts kinetic energy into electrical energy during braking. The recuperated energy is stored in an UltraCap module on the vehicle roof, which is significantly lighter and more compact compared to a battery of similar capacity. The energy stored in the UltraCap ensures that the onboard power supply is independent of the drive, which not only relieves the diesel engine, but also enables the engine to be switched off during vehicle standstill. By reversing the operation of the crankshaft starter generator, the MAN D15 engine can be restarted within a few moments and supported by the boost function during subsequent acceleration.
The 9-litre engine is available with outputs of 280, 330 and 360 HP, meaning it ideally covers the typical fields of operation for city buses.
Innovations also for independent wheel suspension, PCV silencers and doors
For the first time, the next-generation Lion's City now has independent wheel suspension. As a result, the movements of the wheel and hub carrier are only slightly transferred to the opposite side when the wheel rolls off road bumps. Overall, a softer designed silencing is possible because the lower unsprung masses act on the force.
The new PCV dampers (Premium Comfort Valve) in the shock absorbers replace the previous silencer technology as a series solution. These purely hydraulic vibration dampers enable optimum chassis tuning in terms of driving comfort and vehicle stability in typical applications such as start-up and driving over long bumps or short obstacles. Thanks to a new oil management concept, significantly more parameters are available, so that a specific tuning for each axle variant is possible, which in turn leads to significantly more comfortable handling.
MAN has also made further improvements to the doors with the new city bus generation. They continue to come from MAN's own door portfolio, but they are 10 cm wider and impress thanks to their harmonious, faster and direct door movement. Pneumatic outward- and inward-swinging doors as well as electro-hydraulically driven inward-swinging doors and swing doors are available. Proven components are used, meaning that no lubrication nor adjustment operations are required during operation. All of this makes the doors reliable. By using the modular kit a cost-effective spare parts supply and high availability is guaranteed, which in turn benefits the LCC.
All light functions available in LED
An example of the claim to set standards with the new MAN Lion's City is provided by the headlamps on the front and rear. It is not just the daytime driving lights where MAN is making use of LED technology. The main headlights are available for the first time in full-LED and together with the LED tail lights form part of the standard equipment. The LED lamps in all lighting functions not only emphasise the characteristic design of the new MAN Lion's City as a special light signature, they also contribute to safety and reduce operating costs. In addition to its high energy efficiency, the lamp boasts a long service life of up to 10,000 operating hours and high reliability, eliminating the need for expensive lamp replacement. At the same time the visibility improves: LED dipped and high-beam headlights are around 50% brighter than halogens. Also, LED light is more diffuse, and, at the same time, has a much greater range.
The interior also uses modern lighting technology. Indirect and optionally continuous LED lighting in warm white as well as optionally coloured ambient light provide a uniform, modern, dynamic lighting design. The engineers paid particular attention to the reflection-free design in order to minimise glare at the driver's workplace.
New seat bracket for flexibility and easy cleaning
This underlines the bright, friendly and visually clean impression of the new interior colour and trim concept. A great deal of thought goes into selecting light and dark colours to provide appropriate functional support to functional areas. At the same time, the new seat bracket with optimised seating distances and the attachment of the seats to side rails not only creates more space but also makes cleaning easier. A standardised seat frame is attached here via two rails on the side wall. Any seat shell can be easily and flexibly mounted using adapters. Even if you stand, you do not have to do so without comfort and safety: The new ceiling support rods with an oval handle profile provide a more ergonomic grip.
Ergonomics, comfort and safety for the driver
In the new MAN Lion's City, the driver also finds a revised and optimised space, which perfectly fits into the design concept with the elegantly curved cabin door. With a focus on ergonomics, comfort and safety, the positioning of the switches and instruments has brought about an increase in user-friendliness. The controls are now arranged in three zones according to the frequency of use, an optional additional right-hand tool rack allows for additional DIN equipment or monitoring monitors. The cup holder and USB port are located in the side panel, and additional storage options are on offer, such as a lockable driver bag compartment and a magazine net.
The driver's seat can now be adjusted horizontally for more ergonomics via an optimal seating position. The instrument panel moves synchronously with the movement of the steering wheel. The standard built-in high-resolution 4-inch colour display also ensures maximum visibility. Further safety bonuses include the driver's increased sitting position and the front-opening driver's door. A modular pane on the driver's door, which can be extended to the windshield, can additionally provide security against attacks.
The new city bus generation will be manufactured in the MAN plant in Starachowice/Poland starting in the first half of 2019.

Gas-powered for 75 years: MAN continues the success story
Gas-powered for 75 years: MAN continues the success story
75 years ago, MAN Truck & Bus brought its first gas-powered bus to market, setting a new standard in doing so. Now a new chapter of the success story begins with a brand-new development: the MAN E18 gas engine.
- First gas-powered MAN city bus hit the road in Nuremberg in 1943
- MAN has been a market and technology leader in gas-powered city buses in Europe for many years
- Right on time for its anniversary, MAN is releasing a newly-developed gas engine
The first gas-powered MAN city bus celebrated its début in 1943. This year, exactly 75 years on, commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus is bringing another newly developed gas engine to market: the MAN E1856 LOH. It will be exhibited for the first time at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover, Germany, in September.
Then, as today, MAN broke new ground with its gas engine. The first gas-powered MAN bus was used for local public transport in Nuremberg. A trailer was attached to the vehicle, allowing it to increase its range considerably, as the gas cylinders were located on the bus and trailer roofs. “As a result, there was a cylinder volume of 22 m³, which made significantly longer routes and service times possible,” says Michael Kobriger, Head of Production Bus and the Bus Management Team at MAN Truck & Bus. And there were special circumstances at play: MAN built the entire vehicle, which was specifically designed to be gas-powered. The expertise needed for this came from coach assembly work: “The employees had previously become well-acquainted with double-decker construction and built up extensive knowledge, for instance, from manufacturing double-decker bodies for chassis starting in 1935,” Kobriger explains.
Also in 1935, MAN was already developing chassis for trucks that could be run on alternative fuels. Gas canisters with producer gas, cylinder gas and lignite gas oil were used. In the late 1930s, production of “wood gasifiers” increased on account of growing natural resource scarcity; MAN primarily installed these systems in trucks and tractors. The wood gas generators were the most widespread alternative drive systems.
“MAN has been a market and technology leader in natural gas-powered buses in Europe for many years. We have applied our decades of expertise to develop a new gas engine, allowing us to keep offering customers cutting-edge technology as we move into the future. This rates highly for its exceptional cost-effectiveness and extremely low exhaust gas emissions, among other things,” notes Rudi Kuchta, Head of Bus Sales at MAN Truck & Bus. In addition, it can be combined with MAN EfficientHybrid, making it even more economical to operate. As a result, along with biogas, the MAN Lion’s City G is the most cost-effective solution for virtually carbon-neutral local public transport, with the natural gas technology offering a huge advantage: outstanding carbon footprint outcomes for operators when vehicles are run on regeneratively or synthetically produced natural gas. “This is an important step forward into the future of MAN and many transport companies, especially when it comes to air quality control in urban areas,” Kuchta adds.
MAN Vans at the IAA 2018
The well-established, Munich-based company last year successfully entered the van segment with the MAN TGE. The MAN van is aimed at demanding customers who need light commercial vehicles to perform challenging tasks. Specialist TGE sales advisors are on hand to provide custom solutions.

- Engines from 75 kW to 130 kW
- Safety as standard thanks to Emergency Brake Assist
- Service and deployment round the clock
Full-range vendor
MAN is a full-range vendor, offering vehicles from 3.0 to 44 tonnes gross vehicle weight rating to handle any transport task. MAN has extended its long-standing customer-oriented truck business into the van segment with the TGE. The focus is always on finding the best solution for the customer. Specially trained staff are on hand to provide expert advice and support. They provide many years' experience, as well as liaising efficiently with the various body manufacturers and working closely with large key-account customers. Teamwork between the customer, the body manufacturer and MAN's sales and service functions results in a vehicle that will offer optimum user value through its life cycle. MAN Truck & Bus sees the target groups for future applications of its van in the logistics and construction sectors, as well as meeting the specific needs of professional trades and passenger transport operators. What all the applications have in common: The MAN TGE offers the best total cost of ownership (TCO) figures thanks to its minimal drag coefficient (Cd) value of 0.33, the lowest fuel consumption in its class, and low servicing and repair costs.
Lots of space and high load capacity
Alongside the panel van and a glazed combi, single-cab and crew cab bodies enhance the portfolio. The single- and double-cab variants can of course be ordered with a wide range of body units ex-factory. The MAN TGE comes in a choice of two wheelbases, three roof heights and three lengths. The panel vans range in length from 5983 millimetres, to 6833 millimetres, up to the 7388 millimetres of the long variant with the large overhang. The available vehicle heights are 2340, 2575 and 2800 millimetres. In the right combination, this results in a maximum load space capacity of 18.4 cubic metres. Bright LED lighting of the load space always comes as standard. The entry-level MAN TGE feature a 3.0 tonne gross vehicle weight rating, while the top-of-the-range model offers 5.5 tonnes. The trailer hitch enables a further 3.5 tonnes to be transported. The maximum payload of the 3.5 tonner, for example, is exceptional. Ideally configured, it is able to carry a load of up to 1.5 tonnes.
Diverse and economical drive systems
There is also a wide range of available drive variants. Depending on the permissible gross vehicle weight rating, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive are available, optionally featuring a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic gearbox. The MAN TGE features a new-generation diesel engine promising high levels of durability and reliability. The 1968 cm3 engine comes in 75 kW/102 hp, 90 kW/122 hp, 103 kW/140 hp and 130 kW/177 hp variants. The four-cylinder unit is specially designed to handle the tough demands of a commercial vehicle's working life. Economy and robustness were the top priorities in developing it. Attributes which are combined in the MAN TGE to deliver new best-in-class performance in both economic and ecological terms.
Comfort and everyday practicality in the interior
The TGE's cab combines a commercial vehicle's workplace with a practical living space. Lots of well-designed storage facilities support drivers in their daily work. The upholstery and shaping of the driver's seat – available in four design variants – provide for optimum comfort on long trips and offer perfect side support. Durability is assured by tried and proven wear-resistant coverings from the truck model series.
Maximum safety thanks to assistance systems
The Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) fitted as standard in the TGE represents MAN's major contribution to road safety. Sensors monitor critical distances to the vehicle ahead and help to reduce the vehicle's stopping distance. As an additional safety feature, the integrated City Emergency Brake automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds to reduce rear-end shunts – one of the most frequent causes of accidents – and therefore minimise off-road times and repair costs, as well as enhance the vehicle's residual value. The optional Reversing Assist helps when reversing out of parking spaces. A trailer manoeuvring assist feature can also be activated as required. The electromechanical power steering compensates for countersteer forces such as those created by side winds. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) ensures high levels of comfort on lengthy motorway stretches. The drowsiness detection function and the multi-collision brake enhance safety for everyone. The multi-collision brake prevents secondary collisions with other obstacles or road users in the event of an accident.
Outstanding service
The new model series additionally benefits from the professional backup of MAN Service: It is renowned for providing uncomplicated assistance, often without the need to arrange a service centre appointment, fast help in emergencies, including at weekends and at night, and very long opening times. Full-service packages are of course available, as well as flexible repair and maintenance contracts. Extended warranties, a mobility guarantee and 24-hour breakdown assistance round off the range of workshop services. MAN also offers specially tailored financial services to support fleet managers and owners when procuring vehicles and throughout a vehicle's life cycle. MAN ProfiDrive trainers offer a range of courses to provide drivers with continuing professional development training. The course modules cover topics such as how to respond in an emergency, economical driving techniques, and how to stow loads securely. This wide-ranging portfolio enables users and owners to customise their service packages in a way that is rarely seen in the light commercial vehicle segment.
It’s electrifying! MAN is exhibiting MAN eTGE 4.140 at IAA 2018 Commercial Vehicles
It’s electrifying! MAN is exhibiting MAN eTGE 4.140 at IAA 2018 Commercial Vehicles
The MAN plant in Września will start production in July and the fully electric-driven MAN eTGE 4.140 will celebrate its world première at the IAA 2018 Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. With a range of around 160 kilometres and a payload of 1 t–1.75 t (depending on type approval), it is sure to be roaring success for last mile logistics. The MAN eTGE is powered by the very latest vehicle technology and electrical components that have already proven successful in mass production. As well as driving towards the future of the transportation industry in environmental terms, customers opting for the MAN eTGE will also enjoy a wide range of financial benefits.
- The fully electric-driven MAN eTGE is the e-mobility solution for the van segment
- MAN eTGE 4.140 is precisely tailored to requirements in specific e-mobility applications
- Electric vehicle technology in MAN eTGE is refined, reliable and easy to maintain
- E-mobility offers a wide range of benefits to customers
Statistically speaking, 70% of lightweight commercial vehicles used in urban areas average less than 100 kilometres a day. The average speed reached here is low. Combined with frequent starting and stopping in dense urban traffic, the set of requirements this entails almost perfectly describes the ideal application for electric vehicles. For this reason, the MAN eTGE 4.140 will launched for these applications in the near future.
Starting in July, the fully electric-driven MAN van design will roll off the production line at the MAN plant in the Polish town of Września. The van will initially be available in a high-roofed version. Its cargo space provides almost 11 cubic metres of volume. Depending on the type approval and whether it is a 3.5 tonne or 4.25 tonne variant, it offers a payload of up to 1.75 tonnes and a theoretical range of up to 160 kilometres (as per the NEDC). This capacity covers around two-thirds of all journeys in urban centres that are currently completed using vehicles with internal combustion engines.
Electric vehicles need to be connected to a charging station at the end of the day – and the MAN eTGE is no exception here. However, if you consider how natural it has become to charge smartphones overnight, for example, the charging cycle is practically no longer an argument to be made against e-mobility in the commercial vehicle sector. The MAN eTGE is charged at an AC wallbox, reaching 7.2 kilowatts in around five-and-a-half hours. Rapid recharging from zero to 80% is possible within 45 minutes if a DC charging station is available with a combined charging system (CCS) and 40 kilowatts of charging power.
The 36 kWh battery only loses 15% of its capacity after around 2,000 charging cycles with appropriate care. Individual modules consisting of six or twelve cells can also be replaced separately. The 264 lithium-ion HV cells are stored underneath the slightly raised load floor, which is constructed in the same way in the rear-wheel drive body version with a diesel engine. This rules out the excuse of batteries eating up space.
A permanently activated synchronous motor is used for the drive system in the MAN eTGE. The three-phase motor is mounted right at the front on the drive axle in combination with the single-speed gearbox. This provides a maximum of 100 kilowatts of power, delivering around 50 kilowatts in continuous operation, while the vehicle’s immediately available 290 Nm of torque ensures agile handling.
Along with the new drive concept, MAN packs a whole lot more into the eTGE 4.140. Standard features include comfort seats for the driver and front passenger, Climatronic, heated windscreen and seats, a navigation unit, phone connectivity, the latest "Colour" instrumentation and LED headlights. But there's more – the MAN eTGE is just as good as the TGEs with conventional drive systems when it comes to safety. It is equipped with parking assistance systems including side protection, a multi-function camera, rear-view camera, cruise control system, maximum speed limitation, a surroundings monitoring system, a city emergency braking function, plus, of course, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) advanced emergency braking system.
Tradespeople or fleet customers that opt for the MAN eTGE will enjoy financial benefits. They can take part in their country’s e-subsidy schemes and take part in zero emission tenders. The eTGE is not subject to restrictions on entry stemming from any bans on diesel vehicles and allows for early, late and night-time deliveries in metropolitan areas, as it can move very quietly free of engine noise. The lack of an internal combustion engine also has another useful effect: in terms of maintenance, the eTGE has significantly fewer moving parts. This means that various types of typical servicing work such as oil and oil filter changes are not necessary. These factors are attractively reflected in the total cost of ownership (TCO). Last but not least, MAN eTGE owners show a forward-looking commitment to the environment, which they can communicate to their customers.
Winning strategy for gear shifts – the MAN TGE with automatic gearbox for all drive types
Winning strategy for gear shifts – the MAN TGE with automatic gearbox for all drive types
Interested in having a real, robust and flexible commercial vehicle with decent loading volume and payload, which is still as comfortable to drive as a car? The solution is simple: look no further than the MAN TGE – now optionally available with an 8-speed automatic gearbox in all drive variants.
- MAN TGE now available in front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive with 8-speed automatic gearbox
- Convenient tiptronic operation with manual gear selection mode
- Efficient gear shift strategy optimised for lower fuel consumption
- MAN TGE with automatic gearbox provides the top price/performance ratio compared to the competition
A transversely mounted model (AQ450-8A/-8F, 410 Nm) made by Japanese supplier AISIN AW CO., LTD. is used for the front-wheel and all-wheel drive vans. A flange-mounted bevel gear is added to all-wheel drive vehicles. ZF Friedrichshafen’s AL550-8H (410 Nm) is longitudinally installed in the rear-wheel drive TGEs. Both gearbox models are already successfully established in the car market and known for their reliability. The automatic gearboxes have been adapted for installation in the MAN TGE and a number of parts have been designed for greater resistance, including the housing, converter, differential gear, planetary gear set, friction plates and plate carriers, while the parking lock has been strengthened.
Adding the optional 8-speed automatic gearbox for all drive variants, the MAN TGE has given a further boost to its outstanding interior qualities (such as its payload, loading volume and wide variety of bodies and chassis) – namely, greater driving comfort. The automatic gearbox is an ideal way to relieve the driver with its independent activation, selection, transmission ratio and shifting of gears – especially in stop-and-go traffic. The driver can fully concentrate on the traffic on the road and does not have to make so much physical effort; for instance, in having to constantly engage the clutch and make manual gear changes.
But the driver’s experience is not the only thing to be streamlined: the same is true of the vehicle. The automatic gearbox in the TGE shifts without incurring wear and tear. When accelerating, it automatically shifts up to the next gear briefly before reaching the highest permissible the engine speed. When shifting down manually, it only accepts the shifting command when it is no longer possible for the motor to overrev. The gear shift strategy is designed for constantly efficient driving and is optimised for the least possible fuel consumption. In addition, the automatic gear shift system minimises the impact on passengers and cargo, reaching close to perfection in enabling the vehicle to drive off smoothly. This is a must, for instance, if the TGE is used as a city bus, ambulance or patient transport service. Fleet vehicles such as parcel, courier or other delivery services, which are not exclusively assigned to a single driver, also exhibit significantly less need for maintenance thanks to the automatic gearbox. As a result, the TGE has even stronger appeal as an ideal vehicle for urban areas.
As car drivers are accustomed to, the MAN TGE with automatic gearbox offers a convenient tiptronic gear selector lever at the bottom of the instrument panel. The 8-speed automatic gearbox also has a manual tiptronic selection mode – from switch position D, there is a connection to a second, parallel shift gate. Lightly pushing to the right takes the driver to this shift gate, which makes it possible to activate the gear lever and manually shift up (+) or down (-) a gear. The instrumentation display displays the current lever position.
In releasing the TGE, MAN is the only van manufacturer currently able to offer an optional 8-speed automatic gearbox for all drive system variants. In addition, the automatic gearbox MAN TGE is best vehicle on the market in terms of price/performance ratio.
Heavyweight champion – 5.5-tonne MAN TGE with significant payload increase
Heavyweight champion – 5.5-tonne MAN TGE with significant payload increase
Offering almost half a ton of additional payload in the same, wide-ranging product selection, the MAN TGE 5.5-tonner is the ideal van for heavy-duty applications and robust bodies.
- MAN TGE 6.180 and MAN TGE 6.100 now also available with a permissible gross weight of 5.5 t
- Close to half a tonne in additional payload
- MAN TGE 5.5-tonner available in same wide range of versions as MAN TGE 5-tonner
MAN is expanding its range of weight classes for vans with the MAN TGE 6.100 and MAN TGE 6.180. The 5.5-tonne (total permissible gross weight) vehicles provide significant extra payload (amounting to almost half a tonne) compared with the 5-tonne TGE. The new 5.5-tonner will be available in the same lengths and versions. This is especially appealing to customers whose operations involve heavy-duty transport orders, such as vans with workshop fittings for tradespeople. Nor is there any problem as regards bodies with a higher dead weight, such as tipper platform bodies for the construction industry.
MAN achieves the higher total permissible gross weight (based on the 5-tonne TGE) by technically modifying the brake system and chassis. The 5.5-tonner comes with reinforced leaf springs on the rear axle, which now has an increased axle load of 4,000 kilograms as a result. In addition, the heavy-duty TGE is equipped with strong, 17-inch, internally ventilated disc brakes on the front and rear axles. The only technical changes are that the 5.5-tonner has larger wheels, meaning that it requires different tyres (205/70 R17 C 115/113 (HH2)).
At unladen weight, the upgrade only adds 20 kilograms. This means that the 5.5 t version of the MAN TGE can now offer customers 480 kilograms of additional payload.
Fantastic four – the MAN TGE 4x4
Fantastic four – the MAN TGE 4x4
Prospective four-wheel drive buyers can look to the strong performance of the new MAN TGE 4x4. The chassis with permanent all-wheel drive has traction to suit customers’ needs in a range of driving situations thanks to its Haldex clutch. MAN builds the TGE 4x4 ex works, allowing it to offer the best-priced all-wheel drive van on the market.
- MAN TGE 4x4 chassis with permanent all-wheel drive
- Front-axle drive with Haldex clutch ensures ideal four-wheel driving characteristics
- Most attractive all-wheel drive pricing in the van segment
With its new 4x4 chassis, the MAN TGE is ideally suited as a basic vehicle for the building sector, or as a municipal or special-purpose vehicle. MAN uses a bevel gear on the front-wheel drive system to provide permanent all-wheel drive, while a fifth-generation Haldex multiple-disc clutch is used for the power transmission to the rear axle. This multiple-disc clutch is notable for its higher precision, more compact design and lighter weight.
The MAN TGE’s all-wheel drive is a smart system, as it responds to the driving situation at hand and is automatically activated. This occurs at rapid speed, since the electronically controlled Haldex clutch has a response time of just 80 milliseconds. If required, its discs (which run in an oil bath) can be arranged in an axial layout to distribute the front-axle drive’s torque between the front and rear axle.
The MAN TGE features the only all-wheel drive system that factors in all the parameters from all the vehicle’s sensors. The Haldex clutch’s control unit receives all the data and information via the CAN bus and – unlike other all-wheel drive solutions – can be freely combined and fully integrated with all the driver assistance systems such as ABS, ESP and ASR. For example, if the ESP is operating or there is slip on the front wheels, the driving torque can be transmitted to the rear axle continuously from zero to 100%.
The flexible distribution of the driving torque not only assists with traction in the MAN TGE 4x4; it can also positively affect the driving dynamics. However, if the 4x4 drives quite “normally” on a paved surface, the all-wheel drive will not be active and the driver can enjoy the advantages of complete front-wheel drive. In this case, the TGE offers excellent, torsion-free handling and is efficient as far as fuel consumption is concerned.
The combination of the front-wheel drive and Haldex clutch means that the TGE chassis does not experience any limitation to its ground clearance, with the possible height for cargo space also remaining unaffected. The only noticeable difference with the all-wheel drive is a small increase in its unladen weight of close to 100 kilograms.
The all-wheel drive is available – directly ex works, no less – along with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The MAN TGE 4x4 all-wheel drive solution costs less than half the amount of the other, comparable all-wheel drives in the van segment.
The IAA Commercial Vehicles will also feature a version of the MAN TGE with selectable all-wheel drive for truly demanding applications away from paved roads, which MAN is currently designing in partnership with Oberaigner Automotiv GmbH.
What's inside counts – the MAN TGE engine and drive variants
What's inside counts – the MAN TGE engine and drive variants
The MAN TGE's engine and drive system range is powerful, practical, and combinable in a number of variants. Based on a latest-generation two-litre diesel engine, a total of four engines featuring power outputs between 75 kW/102 hp and 130 kW/177 hp are available, depending on the chosen drive system. Customers can choose a rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive MAN TGE in line with their specific needs.
- State-of-the-art diesel engine generation
- Front-, rear- and all-wheel drive
- Manual and automatic gearbox
- Electromechanical steering
Engines: The MAN TGE features the VW Group's state-of-the-art generation of diesel engines. Assuring durability and reliability, the intercooled, turbocharged four-cylinder unit is specially designed to meet the high demands imposed on light commercial vehicles. Whether for a long or short trip: Economy and robustness, built to run for several hundred thousand kilometres, and promising top performance in terms of economy and eco-friendliness, are the characteristic attributes of the Euro 6-compliant engines. The 1968 cm3 diesel engine comes in 75 kW/102 hp (280 Nm), 90 kW/122 hp (300 Nm), 103 kW/140 hp (340 Nm) and 130 kW/177 hp (410 Nm) variants. Diesel consumption figures are between 6.7 and 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres, while the CO2 emissions of between 175 and 184 g/km are the lowest in the segment. The exhaust gas is cleaned by an SCR catalytic converter using AdBlue additive from a generously proportioned 18-litre tank. Average AdBlue consumption is around 0.15 litres per 100 kilometres.
Drive: MAN TGE buyers can choose between three drive systems depending on the application: The front-wheel drive, fitted as standard in the segment, has an approximately 100 millimetre lower load space floor than the rear-wheel drive variant, resulting in a lower loading sill, which means it offers the highest load capacity across the entire MAN TGE model range of approximately 18 cubic metres. As an added benefit, the compact transverse-mounted engine and gearbox unit also cuts the vehicle's unladen weight, and thus increases the load capacity with a comparable body. The permissible gross vehicle weight rating of the front-wheel drive version ranges from 3.0 to 4.0 tonnes.
The same is true of the all-wheel drive. Thanks to the identically engineered forebody, its maximum total weight is also 4.0 tonnes. That permits the panel van to carry loads of around 1.35 tonnes. The traction benefits of the 4x4 are obvious, especially in off-road applications. And it is of course also highly practicable in countries and regions which are very mountainous, or where there is a lot of snow in winter.
The MAN TGE with conventional rear-wheel drive, featuring a longitudinally mounted engine and gearbox unit, is suitable for vehicles from 3.5 to 5.5 tonnes permissible gross vehicle weight rating. The rear-wheel drive handles load distribution with supreme assurance, and is especially practical for towing a trailer. While the 3.5 tonner distributes the power to single wheels via an open differential, in the heavy 5.5 tonne variant twin tyres provide adequate traction with low surface pressure. This is particularly advantageous on loose, unsurfaced tracks, such as on construction sites. Balanced axle ratios guarantee the right amount of power whatever the vehicle's weight rating.
A 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic gearbox is optionally available for the TGE, depending on the engine variant. The short transmission ratios have a very positive effect in terms of fuel consumption and vehicle agility. Thanks to that wider spread, the diesel engine runs at optimum efficiency in all rev ranges with no loss of tractive power. While the eighth gear is designed as a low-revving, fuel-saving overdrive, the shorter-ratioed first gear aids starting with a full load or when pulling a trailer. Both gearboxes can also be combined with all-wheel drive. There is also an optional differential lock function for the rear-wheel drive. A mechanical power take-off with an output of up to 40 kW is available for the rear-wheel drive MAN TGE in conjunction with the longitudinally mounted gearbox.
Chassis: With independent front suspension (McPherson struts) and a rigid axle on leaf springs at the rear, the MAN TGE's chassis tuning is unique in the van segment. Safe, excellent handling and exemplary, car-like driveability are characteristic features of the chassis. As a result, the front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and also the rear-wheel drive MAN TGEs deliver outstanding dynamism and stability even when carrying their maximum payload. Differing progressions of spring characteristics as well as (up to three) leaf spring layers, stabilisers on both axles, and the high rigidity of the frame and body, are all factors contributing to the remarkable handling.
The notably agile driveability of the MAN TGE is aided by an electromechanical steering system. It enables a wide variety of safety and comfort features, implemented in numerous driver assistance systems. For example, active steering manoeuvres, such as is required by the parking assist, is only made possible by this steering system isolated from the engine. Moreover, an electromechanical steering system uses less energy than a conventional power steering system with a continuous-running servo pump. That saves on fuel and cuts CO2 emissions. With a wheelbase of 3638 millimetres, the turning circle of the front-wheel drive variant is an exemplary 13.6 metres.
The single-wheel TGE models are fitted with size 235/65 16 C tyres; the twin tyre variants are fitted with size 205/75 16 C. Other tyre and wheel sizes can be ordered.
Small but strong as a lion – the MAN TGE is conquering the van segment Europe-wide
Small but strong as a lion – the MAN TGE is conquering the van segment Europe-wide
Last year MAN added the first van to its light commercial vehicle portfolio in the MAN TGE. The reasons behind the venture into new territory were the high growth rates being seen in the van segment and the desire to provide customers with tried and proven MAN quality on a somewhat smaller scale. Bearing the lion emblem on its radiator grille, the MAN TGE is the ideal solution for light freight and passenger transport duties.
- MAN TGE rounds off the MAN commercial vehicle portfolio
- Flexibility of MAN TGE impresses wide-ranging target groups
With the launch of the MAN TGE last year, the Munich-based commercial vehicle manufacturer began targeting a "lion's share" of the van market for the first time in its history. The so-called C/D segment of light commercial vehicles between 3.0 and 6.0 tonnes gross vehicle weight rating is booming. New vehicle registrations in the segment have been growing steadily across Europe in recent years, and double-digit growth rates are predicted for the future. Ever-expanding sectors, such as online retailing, are opening up more and more transport opportunities for small and light vehicles. This is where the strength of a big van such as the MAN TGE lies – able to be driven on a category B licence, and offering driveability similar to that of a car. Other key attributes of the 'little MAN' are its attractive design, the almost unlimited flexibility of its chassis and body variants, and the tried and proven quality of the MAN brand. The focus markets for the MAN TGE, alongside the German-speaking countries, are southern and south-western Europe, especially the traditionally strong markets in Italy and France, which together have recorded over 120,000 new vehicle registrations annually in the C/D segment in recent years. The Benelux countries and the UK are also seeing steady growth, with sales likewise over the 120,000 units mark. The forecasts for Germany are at a similarly high level.
The target groups for the MAN TGE are as wide-ranging as its potential applications. Whether for logistics companies, courier, express and parcel services, mobile service providers, trades or passenger transport: the TGE offers the right solution for all customer requirements. MAN sees particular strengths in the logistics and construction sectors. But applications for the MAN van are also to be found in the trades market as well as for passenger transport. Notwithstanding the wide variability of the MAN TGE, all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive variants are likely to be especially popular in line with their suitability for the construction trades. Customers' wishes for high load capacity are additionally driving the segment above 3.5 tonnes permissible gross vehicle weight rating. A range of chassis variants and engine configurations, and the choice of all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, offer innumerable options. And not forgetting de-luxe outfitted combi versions in a nine-seater configuration for passenger transport.
A specialist MAN TGE sales team has been on hand offering expert advice to buyers all across Europe since the launch in 2017. They also liaise efficiently with the various body manufacturers. And purchasing their vehicle, owners of course also fully benefit from the professional MAN Service: It is renowned for providing uncomplicated assistance, often without the need to arrange a service centre appointment, and fast help in emergencies, including at weekends and at night. Full-service packages are available, as well as flexible repair and maintenance contracts. Extended warranties, a mobility guarantee and 24-hour breakdown assistance round off the range of workshop services.
MAN enjoys a successful start to 2018 as a new full-range vendor
MAN enjoys a successful start to 2018 as a new full-range vendor
With the MAN TGE, the well-established, Munich-based company is expanding its selection to become a full-range vendor. It is a year now since the van with the lion on the radiator grille was launched to complete the MAN product portfolio at the bottom end, extending the range to now cover capacities from 3 to 44 tonnes gross vehicle weight rating. MAN has had a successful start to 2018 as a new full-range vendor, also including lots of new products in its truck portfolio.
- MAN offering full range from 3 to 44 tonnes
- MAN TGE's Vans to Go offer
- MAN truck series boasting optimised interior and operator control concept
- State-of-the-art D08SCR engine for MAN TGL and TGM
- RIO Box fitted as standard in all new Euro 6-compliant MAN trucks in Europe
The time-honoured Munich-based brand is entering the van world for the first time with the MAN TGE. The van range has been in production since the beginning of last year, with the official sales campaign having been launched shortly before that. It means MAN has now extended its long-standing, customer-oriented truck business into the van segment. The new van range is particularly striking in its wide range of variants. Alongside the panel van and a glazed combi, single-cab and crew cab bodies enhance the portfolio. A permissible gross weight rating from 3 to 5.5 tonnes and efficient, robust 102 to 177 hp engines make this the ideal light transport solution for builders, skilled trades, passenger transport, and for diverse applications in distribution logistics. With its Vans to Go scheme, MAN has also launched its line of instantly available ex-factory complete vehicles featuring modifications and special body units for the TGE range.
In the mid-range truck segment, the MAN TGL and TGM were launched this year featuring a new engine with new power outputs. The state-of-the-art MAN D08SCR generation of engines is characterised by its all-SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment technology and a simplified design. This expands the range of applications while making the vehicles more service-friendly and enhancing reliability. MAN has also further reduced the new unit’s consumption. The TGL and TGM also boast added driving comfort and efficiency thanks to new functions for the TipMatic gearbox. Inside the cab, the workplace experienced an additional upgrade with optimised controls, making it even more driver-friendly.
While the latest interior design primarily takes shape around the workplace in the short C and M cabs, drivers will also benefit from a redesign of the living area in the long L, LX, XL, XLX and XXL cabs, which are chiefly used in the MAN TGX and TGS. The living area features include new storage and lighting as well as a retractable fridge, located fully underneath the bunk. All the key comfort functions can be controlled via a new operator control system. In addition, the TGX series ensures restful sleep with an acoustic package that further reduces noise levels in the cab significantly through extensive insulation measures.
MAN has added a Stop-and-Go function to the latest-generation ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) to ease driver fatigue as far as possible on congested roads and in slow-moving traffic. This automatically regulates the distance to the vehicle in front, even at low speeds, slows the vehicle, to a stop if necessary, and automatically moves off again after short stops. As a result, the driver is relaxed and stress-free even in stop-and-go traffic.
Every new truck in Europe that has our lion emblem on the grille and meets the Euro 6 standard has been equipped with a RIO Box as of the middle of last year, allowing customers to keep running their logistics processes optimally with their MAN vehicle. The Box works as a technical interface providing access to RIO, the new digital offering from Volkswagen Truck & Bus. In adding this, MAN has laid the first building block for an infrastructure whose services will be able to connect the entire transport and logistics sector in the future. RIO’s Cloud-based technology solution will, in future, enable customers to access their fleet’s vast range of data in a central location and use a variety of transport and logistics services.
A TGE for any application – the impressive MAN van with a huge range of variants
A TGE for any application – the impressive MAN van with a huge range of variants
The MAN TGE offers the right body variant for virtually any transport task. Five permissible gross vehicle weight ratings are available across a total of three vehicle lengths and the same number of roof heights: 3.0, 3.5, 3.88, 4.0 and 5.5 tonnes. Together with the available axle ratios and drive variants (rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive), a broad portfolio is created from which a wide variety of different sectors can find 'their' MAN TGE.
- Three-way tipper
- Delivery van
- Vans to Go – sector-specific vehicles available immediately
The MAN TGE comes in the form of a conventional panel van with a standard, high or super-high roof – the latter option offering the top height of 2.80 metres and providing a substantial capacity of 18.4 cubic metres. The available vehicle lengths are 5.98 metres, 6.83 metres and 7.39 metres. The TGE combi range is somewhat smaller. It is available as standard (2.35 metre) and high (2.59 metre) roof variants. The body width, excluding exterior mirrors and with single tyres, is 2.04 metres. Various chassis units with a single cab or crew cab round off the basic versions. They can be optionally ordered with an aluminium platform body as well as a tarp and roof bow. In future there will also be a cab-only variant.
The MAN TGE offers impressive load capacities depending on equipment specification and permissible gross vehicle weight rating. For the 3.5 tonne panel van with a short wheelbase and standard roof, for example, it is approximately 1.5 tonnes. The capacities of the heavier models are much higher still, with the chassis of a single-cab unit having capacity for about three tonnes for example. The capacities of the panel van are impressive too however: between 9.3 and 18.4 cubic metres, covering a wide variety of transport requirements. Depending on the body length, the MAN TGE's load space can carry low items from 3.45 to 4.85 metres in length. Convenient loading and unloading is also possible. The high and super-high roof variants provide 1.96 metres and 2.19 metres of standing headroom respectively. The headroom under the standard roof is somewhat lower, but still spacious at 1.72 metres.
With its impressive dimensions and high capacities, the MAN TGE is also a practical option for businesses that have previously been running 7.5 tonne light trucks. The heavy-duty van scores highly in this respect particularly thanks to its comfortable cab, with its ergonomic seating position, and its lower total cost of ownership. Depending on the permissible gross vehicle weight rating, a number of prohibitions and general speed limitations are rendered obsolete. Another benefit is the easy loading offered by the van. The sliding door's clearance is a generous 1.30 metres for example. That enables quick length-wise loading of two adjacent Euro-pallets at a time.
The two rear doors provide good access to the load space. The standard-fit handle on the right-side D-pillar additionally helps the driver to climb into the load space. In conjunction with the high and super-high roof, the opening height of the rear portal is 1.84 metres. A left-side sliding door is available as an option in addition to the standard right-side sliding door. Rear doors with a 250 degree opening angle are also available. They aid loading and unloading on ramps and in tight bays. The generous loading gap of 1.38 metres between the wheel housings (1.03 metres with twin tyres) is also highly convenient. It provides lots of space not only for loading, but also for fittings of all kinds.
The load space and rear of the MAN TGE can optionally be delivered with different floors. While a rubber/plastic floor is available for the combi variants, the panel van can optionally be delivered with a wood floor made of multi-glued plywood, complete with a non-slip screen-print surface finish. This floor is bolted to the vehicle, which means it can be easily removed to be replaced or to install specific equipment items. The optional universal floor offers great flexibility. It provides special attachment points as preparation for cabinet installations from leading manufacturers. This enables a high degree of flexibility in terms of potential installations and multiple usage of existing cabinet systems. Further options are in-floor cross and length-wise rails, as well as lashing rails at parapet height and below the roof frame for easy load securing. The load space is lit by LEDs as standard.
Depending on the design and engine variant, trailer loads of up to 3.5 tonnes can be towed. The permissible gross vehicle weight rating is eight tonnes. Every MAN TGE is factory-prepared for fitting a trailer hitch. Whether a ball or open-end hitch: cost-effective retrofitting is possible at any time. Additional freight can also be transported on the roof of the MAN TGE. The maximum load with the standard roof is 300 kilos, and 150 kilos with the high roof. 100 kilos is the maximum load for the single cab and crew cab variants.
Most of the vans are customised for a specific application – such as for construction sites, municipal utilities, logistics, or emergency services – only after being sold. As in the case of its truck range, MAN makes this procedure much easier for MAN TGE customers by working closely with the manufacturers of a wide variety of bodies and equipment modifications in the van segment. MAN TGE customers can consult a sales adviser, obtain a finance quote and sign up to a purchase agreement all in one place, and from a single source. Alongside the basic models, available options including a chassis with cab, crew cab, or cab without rear panel and with front bulkhead. For sector-specific custom chassis units, MAN also supplies the TGE as a cab-only unit.
Thanks to the different wheelbases and overhangs, the chassis units enable bodies up to 3.7 metres (crew cab) and 4.5 metres (single cab) in length to be mounted. The wide track and the standard equipment specification for all variants featuring the Electronic Stability Programme ESP, including a loading detection function, also provide an even greater boost to driving safety. This is also aided by the axle load reserves, which compensate for any unbalanced loading.
The MAN TGE comes with a range of power take-off (PTO) units for its various applications. For example, the motor can simultaneously power two auxiliary units, such as a hydraulic pump and a power supply or an AC compressor, independently of each other. The ribbed V-belt necessary for this is designed to last for the lifetime of the engine. Lateral power take-off from the manual gearbox (ML 410) of the rear-wheel drive versions is also possible. Its maximum continuous power output is 28 kW (38 hp). Even more power can be drawn in conjunction with an oil cooler. Then as much as 40 kW (54 hp) is available at around 2300 rpm.
Thanks to CAN data bus technology, the MAN TGE features an electronic interface (commercial vehicle gateway) which allows the body manufacturer to take specific pre-programmed actions influencing the control of vehicle functions. For a three-way tipper body, for example, the following processes can be automatically initiated at the start of the unloading operation: Activate the hazard warning lights and acoustic warning signal; set the engine to the appropriate idling speed; mute the radio; and reduce top speed down to walking speed. Additionally, the driver is able to initiate and control selected vehicle functions, such as the tipper, from his smartphone. That saves on costly retrofitting of specific controls in the cockpit.
MAN's Vans to Go module – a new feature in the van segment – is employed in selling the numerous available body solutions. It provides pre-configured sector-specific models featuring MAN-tested bodies and equipment modifications. Vans to Go are available to customers immediately. It takes just 48 hours from receipt of order to delivery. Customers are thereby saved the trouble of configuring custom body designs, yet can still be certain that all the features essential for immediate deployment of the vehicle are already installed on-board as standard, and all that is otherwise required is some minor customisation at the local dealership or at the customer's own depot. Vans to Go are sold through the online platform at www.vanstogo.man.

Safe and sound – MAN TGE features extensive driver assistance and safety systems
Safe and sound – MAN TGE features extensive driver assistance and safety systems
MAN has fitted the TGE with numerous driver assistance and safety systems – with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) even coming as standard. There is also a range of optional features including parking assist, lane change assist and the Lane Guard System, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), electromechanical power steering and driver emergency assist with a multi-collision brake, and much more. MAN features in, and for, the TGE place it at the very leading edge of vehicle safety.
- Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) fitted as standard in the MAN TGE
- A total of 18 driver assistance and safety systems available for the MAN TGE
- Systems combine safety and comfort
The Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) fitted as standard in all variants of the MAN TGE sets a new benchmark in van safety. The EBA system's sensors monitor the distance to the vehicle ahead, and the system reacts to critical approach situations in two stages: In the first stage, the EBA alerts the driver by means of acoustic and visual signals to the risk of collision due to sudden sharp deceleration of vehicles or slow-moving traffic ahead. In parallel, the vehicle is 'prepared' for emergency braking. The brake pads are applied to the brake disks, though the vehicle is not yet slowed. The response of the hydraulic brake assist function switches to a more sensitive mode. If the driver does not respond to this alert, in the second stage a single brief brake jolt warns of an impending rear-end shunt and the response of the EBA is stepped up. When the driver then presses the brake pedal, the full braking power is immediately available. If the braking action is not sharp enough, the EBA automatically increases the braking pressure to the necessary level so that the vehicle can stop before hitting the obstacle.
As an additional safety feature, the integrated City Emergency Brake automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds to reduce rear-end shunts – one of the most frequent causes of accidents – and thus minimise off-road times and repair costs, as well as enhancing the vehicle's residual value.
Reversing out of parking spaces in bulky vehicles, in particular, demands slow and patient manoeuvring. The park exit assist available as an option for the MAN TGE assists the driver in such a situation. Its rear bumper sensors monitor the area to the sides and rear of the vehicle. If traffic crossing behind gets too close, an acoustic signal warns the driver accordingly. If the driver does not react immediately, the park exit assist automatically brakes the vehicle, executing a full braking action if necessary.
The lane change assist provides added safety while driving. Aided by the blind spot assist, above a speed of 15 km/h it alerts the driver of objects within the warning zone by means of an LED display in the exterior mirror. The system alerts the driver to the potential hazard by means of the LED in the relevant mirror lighting up. If the driver nevertheless activates the indicator with the intention to change lane, the LED starts to flash more brightly. The side wall protection assist is designed to help in critical situations at walking speed, such as when parking. It uses 16 ultrasonic sensors to monitor the area immediately adjacent to the vehicle and warns of nearby pillars, walls and even pedestrians. If there is something in the way while the driver is manoeuvring or parking, the system give a visual and an acoustic signal.
The optional park assist helps to ensure that things don't even get that far. As already fitted in many cars, the function takes over control of the wheel to manoeuvre the MAN TGE smoothly and efficiently into a parking space, either parallel or perpendicular according to the selected mode. The park assist function will also tell the driver if the parking space found is not feasible. The system gauges the space and determines the starting position. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals as appropriate. The driver still retains control of the vehicle at all times however. And the assist function can also exit automatically afterwards too – at least from parallel parking spaces.
Reversing and manoeuvring with a trailer is particularly tricky. It can be a real trial of patience for inexperienced drivers especially, as well as for other road users. The steering angle is key to precise reversing, but it is easy for the driver to miss the steering points that will cause the combination to respond as desired. And the inverted view of the reversing path displayed in the rear-view mirror also makes it more difficult to move the steering wheel correctly. Fortunately, the MAN TGE's trailer assist can help by taking over the steering as required. All the driver has to do is engage reverse gear, press the park assist button and use the mirror adjuster to direct the trailer as necessary. The vehicle steers automatically. The driver remains responsible for gear-shifting, accelerating and braking –
and of course for complying with the rules of the road. The MAN TGE's traffic sign recognition feature does, however, provide the driver with a useful aid, drawing attention to speed limits and no-overtaking signs. The system uses a camera to identify traffic signs along the road. The information is indicated by up to three characters on the multi-function display and/or on the navigation system display. The priority sign requiring immediate compliance is always displayed at the top. Time-limited signs are listed to the right of it.
The light assist feature for the MAN TGE automatically activates and deactivates the high-beam headlights. The system also automatically activates the high beam above a speed of 60 km/h in complete darkness, as well as of course additionally detecting vehicles ahead and oncoming vehicles and automatically dipping the headlights to avoid glare for other drivers.
The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) provides high levels of comfort on long stretches. It permits safe, and relaxed, driving in nose-to-tail traffic by continuously monitoring the area in front of the vehicle. To do so, the system uses sensors to measure the distance to vehicles ahead and their relative speeds. The driver sets the desired time interval and speed using buttons on the multi-function steering wheel, and the vehicle then maintains a virtually constant distance to the traffic ahead. The target and actual distances can optionally be shown on the multi-function display for comparison purposes. The driver can of course accelerate, brake and engage the clutch to override the ACC at any time. In conjunction with an automatic gearbox, the ACC also brakes the vehicle down to a complete stop, for example on encountering the end of a traffic jam.
Another useful helper on lengthy drives is the Lane Guard System. It activates automatically above a speed of 65 km/h, providing a visual alert and (depending on the vehicle specification) an additional signal on the steering wheel. The Lane Guard System also continuously and softly countersteers. To do so, a camera identifies the lane markings on the road – whether solid or broken lines, and however many of them there are. The function also works in darkness or fog. The system will not work if there are no detectable lane markings however. The Lane Guard System will also not respond if a turn indicator has been activated prior to crossing a line. The driver can override the active Lane Guard System at any time by applying a small amount of force, and always remains responsible for keeping ultimate control of the vehicle.
Talking of control: the MAN TGE also assists its drivers with an electromechanical power steering system. Its advantage over a hydraulic power steering system is that it only uses energy when the driver needs it. In addition to significantly reducing fuel consumption, the system also enables new comfort and safety features. As one example, the steering acts as a side wind assist function, compensating for countersteer forces caused by strong side winds or cambered roads. The active centring and precision control provides a much enhanced sense of safety, because the driver needs to make fewer corrections to the steering. Moreover, comfort assistance features such as the trailer assist described above are only technically feasible with the aid of electromechanical power steering. Also, the adaptation of the steering assistance to the specific vehicle's engine and equipment specification provides an optimum steering feel.
The drowsiness detection function is likewise designed as a preventive system to protect the driver's well-being. It analyses and assesses the driver's steering behaviour dependent on the driving time, the time of day and the light conditions. A warning tone and a symbol on the multi-function display prompt the driver to take a break if the system detects that a rest would be helpful.
The emergency assist function goes a step further. It aids the driver when sudden hazards occur. The system verifies the continuous data exchange between the ACC and the Lane Guard System to monitor the driver's actions. Is he accelerating? Is he braking? Is he steering? If the driver does not respond, the system prompts him to actively take control of the steering by continually jolting the brakes, while at the same time automatically braking. The emergency assist also activates the hazard warning lights and makes minor steering movements to warn other road users.
In the latter instance, the so-called multi-collision brake in the MAN TGE takes effect: It is activated if two independent safety sensors detect a collision. The driver can regain control of the vehicle at any time, though if he is no longer able to brake himself the multi-collision brake automatically initiates braking. This prevents secondary collisions with other road users or obstacles in the event of an accident.
But that is not all: Round-the-clock support and comprehensive information on the vehicle are increasingly key to the success of a business. Companies can only maximise their revenues if they know where and when their vehicles are operating, and can monitor their status. A new-style fleet management solution, unique in the van segment, will in future provide relevant data in operationally prepared form for use by a range of digital services. These value-added services, available ex-factory or as retrofit options, provide information including vehicles' maintenance status and the operational availability of the fleet.

Optimum information and entertainment – the MAN infotainment system in the MAN TGE
The MAN TGE features the latest-generation MAN radio and radio/navigation systems. The systems are equipped with Bluetooth hands-free units as standard, so ensuring safety at the 'workplace' and compliance with the law. All three variants have loudspeakers in the front; additional loudspeakers in the rear are optional.
- MAN Media Van
- MAN Media Van Advanced
- MAN Media Van Navigation
A choice of two radios and one radio/navigation system is available for the MAN TGE. In the basic version, the "MAN Media Van" features 2 x 20 Watts output and two front loudspeakers. The functionality includes an SD card reader, a Bluetooth interface for the mobile phone, and USB and AUX-IN ports.
The eight-inch display of the "MAN Media Van Advanced" and "MAN Media Van Navigation" units assures safe operation and minimises distraction while driving based on a system of proximity sensors: As soon as the driver or co-driver moves their finger towards the touchscreen, the system automatically switches from display mode to a control mode. The display mode presents a concise scaled-down overview. In control mode, elements that can be activated via the touchscreen are highlighted and displayed in larger format, thus aiding intuitive user control. The displays also enable swiping to scroll through lists or browse CD covers in a media library stored on an SD card for example.
The "MAN Media Van Advanced" radio is even more extensive in its functionality, incorporating four loudspeakers on the driver and co-driver sides. Its eight-inch colour display features swipe and zoom gesture control similar to that implemented in current smartphone technology. It is additionally possible to access "Phone" and "Voice Control" menu levels depending on equipment specification. Another available feature is MAN SmartLink (MirrorLink): When a smartphone is connected by a cable to the on-board infotainment system, MirrorLink-compatible apps can be conveniently controlled via the infotainment system's screen. There is also a Media-in port for an iPod.
"MAN Media Van Navigation" is an add-on providing navigation functionality. The equipment and features are identical apart from the integrated navigation system with European map data and the second SD card reader. The price includes free updates to the navigation maps. The top-of-the-range unit fulfils the wish to be connected to information at all times and everywhere, featuring Guide & Inform services from Car-Net. Users can search for interesting destinations, available parking or low-cost fuel in the area; they can get the latest traffic information from the Internet, integrated directly into their navigation map; and can enjoy many more features. DAB is available as an option both for radio and navigation systems.

MAN Mobile24: Non-stop service
It’s obviously better if you never need it, but if the worst comes to the worst, it's good to know it exists - the mobility service from MAN and NEOPLAN. In emergencies, customers can reach the MAN Mobile24 emergency call centre 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and at no charge via the standard Europe-wide hotline. The hotline offers more than 25 languages so that a member of the international team can quickly and easily refer you to one of 2000 workshops throughout Europe or a MAN service vehicle. If you enter your e-mail address, you will be kept up to date online via a tracking link.
MAN ServiceContracts: Repair and maintenance made easy
MAN ServiceContracts services are tailored to the respective requirements and help transport companies reduce costs and increase performance at the same time. Their potential is reflected in absolute planning and costing reliability. In addition, customers also benefit from professional maintenance and preventive repairs that increase operational safety and minimise vehicle downtimes. The repair and maintenance contracts also cover the handling of maintenance work, thus relieving the operator both of administrative and organisational tasks. Another advantage is the Europe-wide handling of unforeseen repairs, including the payment commitment abroad.
MAN Genuine Engine ecoline+: One engine, two lives
A new service in the service portfolio is called MAN Genuine Engine ecoline+. It offers a particularly cost-effective and ecological solution, especially for older vehicles. The old engines are disassembled at the Nuremberg engine plant and the parts cleaned and tested. The MAN Genuine Engine ecoline+ engines are then assembled from the recycled components and a defined number of new MAN genuine parts. All essential wearing parts are always replaced. The engine is only released following a successful test run. The main difference to the MAN Genuine Engine ecoline, is the higher preparation scope for the most important components of the basic engine. The 24-month warranty remains the same.
2-year warranty on service and parts
MAN is convinced of the quality, accuracy of fit and thus also the reliability of the genuine parts. Customers also benefit from this conviction: Instead of the previous one-year warranty, they now receive a two-year warranty on MAN Genuine parts, MAN Genuine parts ecoline and MAN Genuine accessories. The two-year warranty applies to all repairs carried out at MAN service centres, including repairs of MAN Genuine parts, MAN Genuine parts ecoline and MAN Genuine accessories. The scope of services is identical to the previous one-year warranty.
Comprehensive consultancy for transport solutions
Comprehensive consultancy for transport solutions
- Specialised team of consultants for alternative bus and truck drives, consisting of experts on all facets of alternative vehicle operation
- Individual advice to transport companies and fleet operators
- Support with vehicle design, operation and infrastructure, as well as servicing and maintenance
As they navigate the path from ‘low emissions’ to ‘no emissions’, transport companies and fleet operators face a range of challenges that go beyond the vehicle itself. To provide them with the best possible support in this regard, MAN Truck & Bus has called upon a team of consultants specialising in individual transport solutions that offer maximum cost efficiency. Drawing upon a wealth of experience, not only can the qualified consultants provide advice regarding use of the vehicle itself, they are also able to cover issues relating to infrastructure and energy demand, as well as maintenance concepts and fleet design.
“Each customer can select whichever components of our range of services they need, as we provide personalised advice and consultancy. For example, we can use our simulation tools to assist them with route planning or with depot design and layout,” explained Stefan Sahlmann, who heads up the consultancy team at MAN Transport Solutions. Thanks to their expertise, the consultants are able to issue advice regarding the complete use of the vehicles – both trucks and buses – ranging from operation and infrastructure to servicing and maintenance. This includes traffic planning with vehicle scheduling and route planning, management of batteries and charging, analyses and optimisation of energy requirements, together with maintenance plans, and depot design and training. Alongside the experienced consultants, the analysis and evaluation tools that are available also play an important role.
“Our aim is to enable companies to make a well-planned entry into the field of operating alternative drives that have been designed to optimise the TCO,” explained Stefan Sahlmann. Thanks to experience gained while working on other projects, including within the scope of innovation partnerships, MAN is able to share its specialist knowledge with its customers and to accompany fleet operators into the future. “As we give thought to the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) across the entire life cycle, we are, for example, already in a position to issue advice regarding the changing of batteries,” stated MAN’s Head of Transport Solutions. At present, the most significant challenges posed by this revolve around the planning and installation of the required infrastructure; the planning of ranges, taking into account the amount of power consumed by the vehicle’s heating and air-conditioning systems; as well as consumption optimisation and ensuring power supply reliability while charging.
By the Pros for the Pros – Tailor-Made Sectoral Training from MAN ProfiDrive
By the Pros for the Pros – Tailor-Made Sectoral Training from MAN ProfiDrive
- MAN ProfiDrive offers targeted professional driver training and continuous professional development courses for different sectors’ specific needs
- Partnerships with relevant body and equipment manufacturers perfectly complement the training
- MAN ProfiDrive puts emphasis on adding value through practical expertise and customer focus
Offering customised and needs-based sectoral training sessions for truck and bus drivers, MAN ProfiDrive has been focusing on the requirements and demands of its customers with even greater precision since the end of last year.
Customers can compile a training programme for their transportation tasks from an extensive portfolio of training modules. The MAN ProfiDrive experts work together with the customer to develop and design the events, as well as organise the time, schedule, location, and make adjustments to the basic training content (such as driving safety, technology, load securing, off-road training and efficiency).
The special part of the new sectoral training? MAN ProfiDrive brings a huge variety of body and accessory manufacturers into the fold, providing the perfect addition to the training courses. For instance, one of the first events for short and long timber transport drivers involved experts from Palfinger (loading cranes) and ExTe (trailers and specific load securing systems). Another training session for mixer truck drivers was a joint effort with body manufacturer Liebherr, while experts from the testing department at tipper manufacturer Meiller refreshed the participants’ practical knowledge during off-road and traction training for drivers of MAN trucks with off-road gears.
The liquids & gases sectoral training is another example of the diverse selection of options for those involved in that segment of the transport industry. This provides tank truck drivers with an intensive course on driver safety, focusing on critical driving situations, the physics of driving and the use of assistance systems, as well as highlighting commonplace vehicle technology with bodies. These sessions can also be combined with ADR training, instruction in work safety or fire extinguishing training.
Users of municipal works vehicles are also intended to receive targeted attention in the form of MAN ProfiDrive vehicle training in partnership with body and add-on equipment manufacturers. Practical experience can be gained via adverse weather or winter driving exercises or training on suitable terrain. Partnering with rescue technology and body manufacturers, vehicle training can also be laid on for fire brigade staff or relief workers who use special vehicles in extreme situations. In addition, there are vehicle exercises involving real-world conditions, terrain-based training or load securing work.
Bus drivers are the focus of a special emergency training course, in which they receive a comprehensive refresher on immediate measures at the accident site and on first aid. An authentic evacuation exercise and fire extinguishing training with simulated flames on board the bus are also part of the package.
The MAN ProfiDrive’s sectoral training portfolio will be continually expanded in the future, always aiming to meet specific needs. After all, MAN customers will be able to add value thanks to the wide variety of flexible training and continuous professional development courses on offer, which extend far beyond technical vehicle services. The experts from MAN ProfiDrive put the vehicle user and their individual requirements during day-to-day operations with the truck or bus at the centre of their work. MAN ProfiDrive courses and training sessions seek to provide practical advice, assistance and knowledge, helping the MAN customer to do their job with their vehicle to the best of their ability.
MAN ProfiDrive: Equipped to deal with all eventualities
MAN ProfiDrive: Equipped to deal with all eventualities
What do you do when an accident occurs? How do you help someone who has suffered a heart attack? And how exactly do you extinguish a fire? All of this is explained, demonstrated and practised during the emergency training provided by the MAN ProfiDrive training provider.
- Emergency training to practice the correct behaviour to adopt in an emergency situation
- Correct use of fire extinguishers practised with a fire simulator
- Evacuation of the bus
It is well known that the bus is the safest means of transport, however drivers must regularly consider how they should behave and help out in the event of an emergency. The ability to keep a cool head coupled with a structured approach can have a decisive impact on the outcome of a critical situation. That is why MAN ProfiDrive also provides emergency training for bus drivers. During this intensive training course, the trainers provide an overview of the most important first aid measures, the correct behaviour to adopt at the scene of an accident and the management of passengers. The new knowledge will be put into practice by means of role plays, the first aid manikin and a practical exercise. This will involve the use of fire extinguishers, for example, by the participants themselves, with guidance from the ProfiDrive trainer. The fire simulator will also create a lasting impression: The doors of the coach are closed and it is filled with smoke (non-toxic, of course) whilst a fire is simulated, before participants practice evacuating the vehicle in an orderly manner. Within seconds, your vision is obscured, which makes it very easy to lose your bearings. “This exercise gives participants an idea of just how difficult a situation of this nature actually is to manage. And that is when panic sets in,” explained Rolf Lechner, Head of Training at MAN ProfiDrive.
MAN ProfiDrive provides safety training to drivers. However, the additional training provided also focuses on subjects such as efficiency, laws and directives and general knowledge regarding new vehicle technologies. The range of subjects offered also covers theoretical learning and practical training based on the German Professional Driver Qualification Act (BKrFQG), which aims to make day-to-day driving even safer and more economical.
