Bavarian Environmental Pact: MAN sets new targets for 2010-2015
MAN Nutzfahrzeuge has a long-term sustainable commitment to the Bavarian Environmental Pact (Umweltpakt Bayern). The focus is on the anticipatory prevention of future impact on the environment.
In the course of a State reception the new Bavarian Environmental Pact, which runs for a five-year phase until 2015, was signed today by the leading representatives of state and commerce and industry in the Kaisersaal of Munich's Residenz. The Bavarian Environmental Pact is an agreement between the Bavarian State government and Bavarian industry. MAN Nutzfahrzeuge has been party to this agreement since the inception of the first Environmental Pact in 1995. Participating companies commit themselves to concrete environmental protection measures over and above the statutorily required standards, with the anticipatory prevention of future impact on the environment in the foreground. The Bavarian Environmental Pact also aims at establishing an environmental knowledge transfer between big and small companies.
MAN Nutzfahrzeuge focal points from 2010 – 2015
During the period up to 2015 MAN Nutzfahrzeuge will initiate measures in five major fields: climate change and energy, renovation of buildings with the aim of making them more energy efficient, energy efficiency in production processes, alternative drive technologies/electromobility as well as the introduction of environment management systems. Some examples of concrete measures in these five fields of action include the following.
Climate change and energy
In its MAN ProfiDrive® training courses MAN Nutzfahrzeuge offers recognised qualifications in economical driving for professional drivers. On average, training enables a five percent saving in diesel fuel in the operation of a truck or bus. This is the equivalent of around 6.3 tonnes of CO2 per vehicle per annum, given a typical annual mileage for a long-haul truck of 150.000 km.
Energy efficiency in production processes
An engine cold test procedure reduces the amount of energy required for the approval of every single engine delivered. This procedure is already in use at the Nuremberg engine plant and is now being expanded to include other series of engines. The energy saving is the equivalent of 3,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. An efficiency project is also running in mechanical production, where it saves 15 percent of the energy needed for every manufacturing hour. Optimisation measures in truck assembly in Munich are expected to result in energy savings of around five percent. This means 4,500 tonnes of CO2 fewer, every year.
When it comes to the focus on alternative drive technologies and E-mobility, MAN Nutzfahrzeuge is currently introducing low-emission hybrid city buses for local public transport throughout Europe. Munich is the first major European city to have taken the pre-series MAN Lion's City Hybrid into service. Additional buses of this type are in service in Hagen (D), Paris (F), Barcelona (E), Milan (I), Vienna (A) and several cities in The Netherlands. MAN achieves a significant reduction of up to 30 percent in CO2 relative to a city bus equipped with a conventional combustion engine.
In the "Electromobility connects Bavaria" project, MAN Nutzfahrzeuge, supported by the Bavarian State government and together with other Bavarian automotive manufacturers as well as partners from industry and local government, is one of the project's prime movers. Its objective is to consolidate Bavaria's industrial and scientific competence in the electromobility sector and create an integrated mobility concept with Munich-Ingolstadt-Nuremberg as its main axis.
Environment management systems at MAN around the world and its service providers
MAN Nutzfahrzeuge is introducing globally certified environment management systems, thus promoting systematic protection of the environment. MAN's service providers are also being motivated to introduce environment management systems. MAN is providing support in the form of training courses and workshops.
